Career Exploration: Another Way to Discover CONNECT Bringing key team members together. Starting the process, dialog, and intentional discussion of what is next. Who is supporting the student? Who does the student value in helping them find a career path? Possible Key Persons: Student, Parent, Friend, SPED Teacher, YTP Specialist, VRC, Job Developer, Educational Aid, etc. Examples of Connect Activities: IEP Team and/or Transition Meeting Scheduling PATH or Person Centered Planning Team Email Developing a Team Contact Sheet Team meeting, identifying roles and other key members BRAINSTORM The team intentionally examining what is know about student interests, strengths, abilities, etc. What previous experiences have occurred? What initial ideas does the student have? What do they want to be when they grow up and why? If they could be anything in the world with no limitation, what would it be? Then explore the meaning behind this, honoring the dream. Informal and formal career assessment. Career Exploration: Another Way to Discover EXPERIMENT Taking the initial list of ideas or top job interests and going out to test in school and community. Trying new experiences, activities, environments out. It’s hard to know what you like without additional context. Experiment phase can happen at any time. It is a safe zone because there is no commitment from the student to pursue this career path. They are merely examining options, testing, and learning. Returning to brainstorming phase as needed. Possible Key Persons: Student, Parent, Friend, SPED Teacher, YTP Specialist, VRC, Job Developer, Educational Aid, etc. Examples of Experiment Activities: Job shadows Informational Interviews Volunteering or work experiences Job Tours Labor market research about careers of interest Creating a budget for themselves in 5 or 10 years. Where do they see themselves and a lifestyle? Career Exploration: Another Way to Discover BUILDING Student has narrowed down their goal choice. They are now expanding and building up on chosen path with an intentional focus to prepare for this goal. This building phase may take many forms, perhaps in gaining a certification, taking a high school class, applying to college, or job searching. The student is building a foundation for success by preparing or expanding on selected goal choice, to assist them in launching into it when ready. Returning to brainstorming and experimenting phase as needed. Possible Key Persons: Student, Parent, Friend, SPED Teacher, YTP Specialist, VRC, Job Developer, Educational Aid, etc. Examples of Building Activities: Job shadow, informational interviews, work experiences designed to build experience and deeper understanding in selected goal choice. Counseling on Post-secondary enrollment options Building a roadmap for career choice, working backwards from the goal to the present Applying to scholarships, education, and training programs Creating a resume and practicing interview skills Visiting a college campus Job searching and job developing Creating a video resume Taking a high school class elective to build interest (i.e. woodshop, photography) Oregon Career Information Systems (CIS): https://oregoncis.uoregon.edu/ Utilizing career exploration suggestions from CIS to dig deeper into career focus SUCCESS Student is on their way toward their goal. They may still be building, but they are immersed in goal choice. The student may be working or entering training. They may be executing their roadmap post high school.
