BBJFC Presentation 5 Coaching Contact Presented by: Joshua Bourke
Developing Awareness
What’s around the player? 1. Players need to develop an awareness of what’s around them. 2. When to turn their body and brace for contact. 3. They need to know how to take contact. 4. Protecting their body … Protecting the ball. 5. Two sides to the development being tackled and being the tackler.
Taking the Tackle
Taking the tackle ¤ What does Selwood do well? 1. Hands up above the tackle. 2. Strong through the shoulders to brace for contact 3. Generally stays up and strong, keeps his head up. 4. Turns body to position himself for contact. • Occasionally ducks to draw contact! • Kids need to know how to protect their head.
How do we train being tackled? ¤ 1 v 1 craft ¤ Tackle box ¤ 3s craft – protecting ball – feeding to spare player ¤ Slowed step by step (knees tackling, walking tackling) ¤ Game sense training drills which include defenders working at match like intensity … Spare drill, inside outside drill, 4 corners score, grids. Equal focus on defense and offense.
Tackling
Tackling ¤ Understanding of the basics … Getting close (closing space) Twisting (putting opponent off balance) Protecting (tacklers head) ¤ Many juniors tackle leading with their head up. How do you keep your head safe. ¤ Dropping to knees to slow opponent.
Marking Contact ¤ Isolation. Above head, in front of the eyes. ¤ In 3s - body use. ¤ Don’t turn in to opponent. ¤ Front and strong. ¤ Two hands to ball is key. ¤ Protect the ball and yourself. Knees, shoulders strong.
