Batesville High School Engineering and Technology Education BHS Engineering and Project Lead the Way Technology Education
Reasons for STEM Education Engaging student interest is imperative, as studies have shown that 75 percent of students talented in math and science during their K – 12 years decide not to pursue STEM in college.
Courses • Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) • Principles of Engineering (POE) • Civil Engineering and Architecture (CEA) • Engineering Design and Development (EDD)
Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) • Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. • They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3-D modeling software and use an engineering notebook to document their work.
Principles of Engineering (POE) • Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. • Students develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation.
• Students learn important aspects of building and site design and development. They apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3D architecture design software.
Engineering Design and Development (EDD) • The knowledge and skills students acquire throughout PLTW Engineering come together in EDD as they identify an issue and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their solution to a panel of practicing engineers. • Students apply the professional skills they have developed to document a design process, and they complete EDD ready to take on any post-secondary program or career.
Additional Courses • Robotics Design and Innovation • Computers in Design and Production • Introduction to Construction
Robotics Design and Innovation (RDI) • Students will design, program, and test innovative technological designs related to robotic systems. Students design, build, and optimize robots to perform a variety of predesignated tasks as well as investigate exciting career and collegiate programs of study. • Students have the opportunity to participate in class competitions or in state and national competitions.
Computers in Design and Production • Students study content areas such as: architectural drawing and print design, design documentation using CAD systems; assignments involving the interface of CAD; 3-D modeling of products or structures and automation in the modern workplace.
Introduction to Construction • Students are introduced to the history and traditions of construction technology. • The student will learn and apply knowledge of the care and safe use of hand and power tools. In addition, students are introduced to blueprint reading, applied math, and safety. • Students will demonstrate building construction techniques, including concrete and masonry, framing, electrical, plumbing.
