  2. Welcome Students & Parents! • Transition from junior high to high school can be very exciting for future freshmen and their parents. • It may also be a time of some nerves and concerns. • We are here to help!

  5. HB 5 Graduation Requirements • The State Board of Education adopted rules (01/31/2014) for a Foundation High School Program • All students now fall under these requirements for Texas graduation • Students’ plans are individualized through Endorsements

  6. Foundation Plan – Statutory Requirements • English Language Arts (4 Credits) English I English II English III Advanced English Course • Mathematics (3 Credits) Algebra I Geometry Advanced Mathematics Course

  7. Statutory Requirements – cont. • Science (3 Credits) Biology IPC or Advanced Science Course Additional advanced Science Course • Social Studies (3 Credits) World Geography or World History U.S. History Government / Economics

Endorsements – Statutory Requirements • A student earns an endorsement by successfully completing: ▪ Curriculum requirements for the endorsement ▪ Mathematics (1 additional credit) ▪ Science (1 additional credit) ▪ Electives (2 additional credits) ▪ Total Credits = 26 ❖ Beginning with the 2014-15 school year, a district must ensure that each student, on entering 9 th grade, indicates in writing an endorsement that the student intends to earn. Students may change their endorsement up to a certain point in their graduation timeline.

  12. STEM Endorsement • Student may earn this endorsement by completing: ▪ Algebra II ▪ Chemistry ▪ Physics ▪ 3-4 additional credits related to Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Math depending on STEM area of specialization

  13. Business & Industry Endorsement • A student may earn this endorsement by completing: ▪ 4 CATE credits from Business & Industry or ▪ 4 English courses from approved list or ▪ Newspaper or Yearbook ❖ Career and Technology Education

  14. Public Service Endorsement • A student may earn this endorsement by completing: ▪ 4 CATE credits from Public Service

  15. Arts and Humanities Endorsement • A student may earn this endorsement by completing: – Coherent sequence of 4 credits from Fine Arts courses

  16. Multidisciplinary Endorsement • A student may earn this endorsement by completing: – 4 credits – one from each of the 4 foundation areas (English, Math, Science and Social Studies)

  17. Distinguished Level of Achievement

Distinguished Level of Achievement • A student may earn a distinguished level of achievement by successfully completing: – A total of 4 credits in mathematics, which must include Algebra II and – A total of 4 credits in science and – The curriculum requirements for at least 1 endorsement ❖ A student must earn this level of achievement to be eligible for top 10% automatic admission to state universities.

Performance Acknowledgements • A student can earn a Performance Acknowledgement for outstanding performance: – In a Dual Credit course (College Courses = 12 hours) – In Bilingualism and Bi-Literacy – On an Advanced Placement exam (AP = score of 3 or above) – On the PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) – On the SAT (combined critical reading & math score of at least 1250) – On the ACT (composite score = 28, not including Writing) – Earning a nationally or internationally recognized business or industry certification or license

  21. Preparation for Next Year Scheduling Conferences

Conferences with Students • Admissions Counselors will begin meeting individually with all incoming Freshman • Meetings will be held at junior highs over the course of several days beginning February 3rd • Students will be assigned to a particular Admissions Counselor, who will walk them through the course selection process • Creating a blueprint for next 4 years
