Endorsements “A student entering Grade 9 in the 2014-2015 school year and thereafter shall enroll in the courses necessary to complete the curriculum requirements for the Foundation High School Program specified in Section 74.12 of this title and the curriculum requirements for at least one endorsement specified in Section 74.13 of this title (relating to Endorsements).” Text of New 19 TAC

  4. What is an endorsement? ? ◆ An endorsement is a broad area of study ◆ It’s a bit like a college major

Distinguished Level of Achievement “A student may earn a distinguished level of achievement by successfully completing the curriculum requirements for the Foundation High School Program and the curriculum requirements for at least one endorsement required by the Texas Education code (TEC)…including four credits in science and four credits in mathematics to include Algebra II.” *required to be considered for Texas Top 10% automatic admissions law (currently top 6% for the University of Texas at Austin) Text of New 19 TAC

Why are students being pushed to choose a career pathway? ◆ Students with career goals are more likely to graduate from high school. ◆ Students who participate in CTE courses are more likely to complete high school. ◆ Students with well-defined career goals are more likely to persist in college. ◆ Students with well-defined career goals are more likely to attain jobs in their chosen career field after college.

Why choose so early? ◆ Having a plan early allows you the chance to take advantage of all the opportunities that exist in Johnson City ISD. ◆ Choosing your path early does not “lock” you in to that path. You can change your mind! ◆ Exploring options early gives you a chance to figure out what you like and what you don’t .

  8. What’s a credit?  High school students earn a half-credit for successful completion of each course each semester. Semester average must be ◼ 70% or better. Students may earn credit if the ◼ year-end average is 70% or better. Attendance matters! Students ◼ who fail to be in class 90% of the time may lose credit for the course. 26 credits are required for ◼ graduation.

  9. College Level Courses Johnson City ISD offers a variety of pre-college and college level courses. All students whose career pathway requires a post-secondary education should consider preparing for the challenges of college by taking advantage of the these courses. ❖ Available in most subject areas ❖ Teacher input is valuable in making this decision ❖ Prepare for college ❖ Earn higher GPA ❖ May earn college credits in 11 th & 12 th grade through Dual Credit, Co- enrollment courses, AP exams, or OnRamps courses ❖ Learn to think, read, and write critically and analytically

  10. Who should take Advanced classes? Students who are: • Self-motivated • Hard-working • Challenge-seeking • Capable of handling faster pace • Willing to invest extra time, but still keep BALANCE • Planning to pursue a highly competitive field

Choose a challenging level of rigor that prepares you for your career goals. World History or World Geography Note: All students are required to take US History in the junior year. U.S. History (EOC) College Course Option: • OnRamps US History U.S. Government and Economics (currently offered) HIST 1301 & HIST 1302 • ACC courses GOVT 2305 & ECON 2301

  34. What Are My Choices For Electives ? • Electives can be chosen from many courses. • First, pick an elective from your endorsement (program of study). Select them in the sequence shown in the course catalog. • Then, pick from your extra curricular activities (example: athletics, art, band, theatre, Ag, yearbook, etc) • Finally, pick something you may enjoy taking even if it’s not required for your graduation plan or endorsement (ex: engineering, ag class, welding course, ecampus, additional PE courses, art, etc.)
