  2. Exhaust Tina Smith NGK Spark Plugs

  3. Why is the Exhaust System Important • Controls emissions and exhaust produced by the engine • Turns harmful pollutants into harmless ones • Reduces loud noises produced from engine combustion • Ensures vehicle is running fuel efficient

  4. Exhaust Components

  5. Exhaust Components Exhaust Manifolds Muffler Exhaust Pipe Catalytic Converter

  6. Exhaust Components PCV Valve Oxygen Sensor EGR Valve

  7. Exhaust Components • Exhaust Manifold – is attached to the engine and vents exhaust gas from engine cylinders • Exhaust Pipes – pipes that connect the entire exhaust system together • Catalytic Convertor – converts harmful emissions into safer ones • Muffler- acts as a silencer to reduce extremely loud noises • Resonator- extra silencer in the exhaust to reduce noise

  8. Exhaust Components- Sensors • Oxygen Sensor- reads oxygen levels in the exhaust and sends signal back to control module • PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Valve - valve that controls the release of crankcase gases and vapors into the intake manifold • EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valve- valve used to recirculate some of the exhaust back into the cylinders to reduce combustion temperature and provide a complete burn of the fuel
