An Olympia masterplan for everyone
Overview Our masterplan vision is to evolve Olympia in to a new cultural district for west London; a hub for the creative industries in art, music and entertainment. With multiple world-class performing arts spaces, community rehearsal spaces for non-profjt performance groups, afgordable work space, an arthouse cinema, a jazz club and restaurant, and independent eateries and shops, Olympia will be a home for everyone. Through the design of the proposals we have sought to: • Invest in the exhibition business and halls to ensure they provide the latest in effjciency and logistics required in the modern era; • Substantial public spaces spread across Olympia; • Open Olympia up from a ticket-only venue to a place for anyone to visit and enjoy.
Community involvement Our vision was created with the guidance of the community. We hosted our fjrst consultation event in September 2017 to seek comments and feedback early in the formation of our vision and continued to hold events and consult throughout the design process. At these events the community said: • Reduce road congestion created by Olympia; • Ensure that the proposals for Olympia benefjt the wider community; • Create places that the community can access without needing to buy an entry ticket; • Communicate the community’s interests with Thames Water, the Metropolitan Police and Transport for London; • Celebrate Olympia’s 130-year heritage; • Continue to engage.
Reduce road congestion created by Olympia We have included a 200,000sqft logistics centre in the proposals and invested in Voyage Control, a cutting-edge logistics management system. This will reduce exhibition congestion on roads to the north of Olympia London by 70%. Wider community benefjts As well as providing benefjts for the immediate community, our proposals would create: • Up to 5,955 direct additional jobs and support up to 6,700 • Afgordable offjce spaces to support entrepreneurs and SMEs • A projected £9.1m annual additional local spend by workers • Partnerships with schools and education providers • Apprenticeships and work experience opportunities
Give back to the community places that do not require an entry ticket With over 2.5 acres of public realm, multiple creative and performing arts venues, a myriad independent eateries and shops, as well as afgordable, incubator, co-working and creative studio offjce spaces, Olympia is truly open to the public once again as a vibrant new cultural district: • Two new major artistic venues: – 1000 seat performing arts space – 1500 seat theatre • A four-screen arthouse cinema • 10,000sqft of performance and rehearsal space free for local charities to use • A new jazz-club style restaurant and venue • Offjce space designed for creatives and media companies • 2.5 acres of pedestrianised squares, streets and sky garden • New cafés, hotels, restaurants and shops Communicate the community’s interests with Thames Water, Met Police and TfL We have worked with Thames Water regarding the community’s concerns over construction of a large-diameter sewer main. As a result, Thames Water has now agreed a simpler, less intrusive solution than digging substantial new drainage.
We have had discussions with the Met Police to ensure our designs and estate management plans create a safer environment, with 7-day security and estate management. this is to create a safer neighbourhood for everyone, particularly around Lyons Walk and during evenings and early mornings in the overall Olympia area. We have set up a petition to reinstate the District Line at Kensington Olympia which has more than 12,000 signatures, and have had meetings with TfL to demonstrate the importance of reinstating this important service; Celebrate Olympia London’s 130-year heritage Through the proposals, Olympia London’s heritage will be celebrated. The historic facades on Olympia Way will be restored to their original design and spaces such as the historic Pillar Hall will be opened to the public. Continue to engage We have consulted throughout the design process, inviting more than 6000 households and businesses to consultations over the last 14 months. We have received hundreds of written comments and many more insights, ideas and suggestions. We will continue to engage with the community now that the applications have been submitted.
Olympia’s masterplan will open a tremendous venue up to the whole community, celebrate its 130-year heritage and ensure its future for generations to come.
