Vi Virginia ¡flood ¡floods, ¡ ¡ 2016 2016 • River ¡banks ¡of ¡the ¡Wakefield ¡River ¡and ¡Gawler ¡River ¡failed ¡ on ¡the ¡morning ¡of ¡1 st ¡October, ¡2016 ¡and ¡low ¡laying ¡flood ¡ plains ¡of ¡Virginia ¡in ¡the ¡Northern ¡Adelaide ¡region ¡went ¡ under ¡water. ¡ ¡ ¡ • According ¡to ¡the ¡Department ¡of ¡Primary ¡Industries ¡and ¡ Regions ¡SA ¡(PIRSA): ¡ • Over ¡200 ¡ProperJes ¡suffered ¡water ¡damage ¡ • Over ¡300 ¡growers ¡were ¡affected ¡(Open ¡field ¡and ¡Greenhouses) ¡ • Around ¡1,000 ¡hectares ¡of ¡crops ¡in ¡the ¡Northern ¡Adelaide ¡ horJcultural ¡zone ¡were ¡destroyed ¡ • A ¡loss ¡of ¡around ¡AUD ¡20-­‑30 ¡million ¡to ¡the ¡Australian ¡economy ¡ ¡ • More ¡importantly ¡there ¡was ¡loss ¡of ¡life ¡directly ¡aBributable ¡ to ¡the ¡damage ¡caused ¡by ¡the ¡flood ¡indicaJng ¡the ¡gravity ¡of ¡ CCA ¡planning ¡failure. ¡ ¡

SA ¡ ¡Governme ment ¡ ¡ac)on • The ¡South ¡Australian ¡Government ¡has ¡announced ¡ emergency ¡financial ¡assistance ¡in ¡the ¡form ¡of ¡grants ¡of ¡up ¡ to ¡$10,000 ¡for ¡300 ¡growers ¡whose ¡properJes ¡were ¡ inundated ¡during ¡the ¡floods ¡this ¡month, ¡totalling ¡$3 ¡ million ¡to ¡reimburse ¡immediate ¡recovery ¡costs ¡(not ¡ covered ¡by ¡insurance) ¡ • Agriculture ¡Minister ¡Leon ¡Bignell ¡said ¡the ¡money ¡would ¡go ¡ some ¡way ¡to ¡helping ¡them ¡clean ¡up. ¡ ¡ • "It'll ¡go ¡into ¡removing ¡rogng ¡vegetables ¡and ¡plants ¡and ¡also ¡ replacing ¡the ¡watering ¡systems ¡that ¡are ¡in ¡the ¡greenhouses ¡out ¡ here, ¡but ¡ ¡this ¡is ¡not ¡the ¡end ¡of ¡what ¡we're ¡going ¡to ¡offer ¡the ¡ growers ¡out ¡here. ¡We ¡will ¡work ¡with ¡them." ¡ • Further ¡taxpayer ¡funds ¡would ¡be ¡needed ¡to ¡support ¡flood-­‑ hit ¡farmers ¡on ¡the ¡Gawler ¡floodplain, ¡north ¡of ¡Adelaide. ¡ • Dewatering ¡the ¡properJes ¡ ¡ Gawler ¡River ¡Flood ¡Recovery ¡Waste ¡ • Waste ¡management ¡ Removal ¡Program, ¡PIRSA ¡

• “Around ¡80% ¡of ¡my ¡property ¡went ¡underwater ¡and ¡the ¡water ¡is ¡ Post-­‑ Po -­‑fl flood ¡ ¡ flowed ¡taking ¡everything. ¡I ¡was ¡franJc ¡trying ¡to ¡save ¡whatever ¡ could ¡be ¡saved”. ¡ ¡ farme mers’ ¡ ¡concerns ¡ ¡ – ¡Short ¡ – ¡ ¡term m • “We ¡have ¡been ¡working ¡for ¡over ¡2 ¡years ¡to ¡develop ¡the ¡soil ¡ structure ¡and ¡prolonged ¡flooding ¡has ¡destroyed ¡it. ¡Health ¡of ¡top ¡ soil ¡is ¡degraded ¡through ¡the ¡erosion: ¡reducing ¡the ¡organic ¡ carbon, ¡leaching ¡of ¡nutrients ¡and ¡reducJon ¡of ¡oxygen ¡levels”. ¡ ¡ • “During ¡and ¡aler ¡flooding, ¡plant ¡roots ¡get ¡drowned ¡and ¡die ¡due ¡ to ¡lack ¡of ¡oxygen. ¡This ¡allows ¡diseases ¡to ¡aBack ¡and ¡to ¡kill ¡ beneficial ¡microbes”. ¡ ¡ • “With ¡oversaturaJon, ¡the ¡soil ¡gets ¡compacted ¡and ¡hardened. ¡ Plant ¡roots ¡cannot ¡grow ¡even ¡long ¡aler ¡flood ¡have ¡gone”. ¡ ¡ • Even ¡aler ¡the ¡massive ¡clean-­‑up, ¡we ¡have ¡to ¡work ¡with ¡the ¡loss ¡ of ¡topsoil ¡and ¡risks ¡of ¡disease ¡to ¡crops ¡of ¡next ¡season”. ¡
