Mental Health Crisis A Police Perspective Inspector Lucy King Norfolk Constabulary
The Challenges • 15% of calls received by our Control Room are related in some way to mental health. • Timely support/advice is often not available in crisis situations, particularly out of hours. • Confusion about how to access / signpost to MH services and difficulties when making referrals. • Limited powers, particularly in private places.
Our Response – Working Together • Mental Health nurses in our Police Control Room • Mental Health nurses in our Custody Suites and Courts • Crisis Care Concordat Action Plan • New national training programme for police officers • Ambulance S136 protocol and S136 suite staff • Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH)
If money were no object! • 24/7 mental health team in our Police Control Room with deployable resources. • A county-wide network of crisis cafes or similar. • More funding to keep people well – preventing crisis. • Better resourced crisis teams. • Regular training for officers co-delivered with partners
