Study Permits • Students in Canada for more than 6 months need a Study Permit. • Students interested in Canada should use the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website as their most reliable resource www.cic.ca. • Current requirements: letter of acceptance, proof of funds, study permit fee, passport and custodianship agreement. • Americans can currently apply for study permits at their port of entry. Student Services & Student Life • Student Advisors – Academic Advisors, Residence Assistants, Peer Mentors, Student Success Leaders available to help with preparation and first year transition • Welcome and Orientation – Edunova Airport Welcome program in August/September in Halifax – Each school offers a welcome and orientation program. Many of these are prior to the arrival of Domestic students and include both Academic programming as well as social and orientation activities • Academic Support and Resources – Writing Centres, Health & Counselling Centres, Accessible Learning, Faculty Office hours, Resident Assistants, Peer Groups, Tutoring • Clubs and Societies Counsellors’ Tour, July 2015 – Universities have hundreds of societies available to students that include academic, humanitarian, social activity based, and many others. They are encouraged as a great way to get involved on campus.

  18. Student Services & Student Life • Athletics – Some of the strongest and most competitive teams in the Country. Our Atlantic teams often contend in National Championships in all sports. – There is a strong emphasis on academics and a high percentage of Academic All Canadians. • Residence and Off Campus Housing – Residence is encouraged in first year as it is a great way to get involved and meet new people. Government Funding and Oversight • Through provincial and federal support the Canadian government aims to make post-secondary education accessible for domestic students • In each of Canada’s 10 provinces and 3 territories there is legislation in place to establish, govern and recognize the quality of post- education programming in that province or territory • Two types of post-secondary institutions, public and private, with varying levels of involvement from government bodies • Several organizations that promote quality and rigorous academic standards Thai Counsellors’ Tour at NSCC

Government Funding and Oversight • Public Universities- autonomous and in some provinces councils or other government appointed bodies have been established with the responsibility for planning and coordinating the development of post secondary institutions • Private Universities-undergo a quality assessment by provincial government authorities as do private institutes and apprenticeship training programs • Also a number of organizations that promote quality and rigorous academic standards Thai Counsellors’ Tour
