  9. Insights from a colleague Wyndeth Davis , Superintendent, Keweenaw National Historical Park Be a person who works, not a worker who is a person in her spare time (good work life balance helps keep a positive outlook on at least one part of life) Government agencies do not have the same kind of values systems people do - and that is okay, but it is something to be aware of Keep a positive outlook - I had always had this before, but I lost it for a bit and did not know how to get it back - I had taken it for granted and had not intentionally nurtured that attitude. Life is a series of deaths and rebirths - I cannot avoid them, but I can control how I respond to them, how I choose to work through them, and there is always the chance to re-form as a person and as a worker (rather than to dissolve) when these things happen Resilience--tools to thrive 9

  10. For maintaining resilience Wyndeth Davis , Superintendent, Keweenaw National Historical Park Set positively phrased goals - even a small goal is a goal ('survive this day' is a goal, but not real positive...lol) I said and wrote positive statements, even when I thought in the back of my mind that it was not going to help -- it did help. It still does. Hold plans lightly, in open hands - so that it is easy to let go, and also easy to grasp something new that appears Be a learner - indulge yourself in learning something for yourself alone Risk regularly! Let go of the side of the pool in small ways, and learn about what that feels like (similar I guess to "failing forward") Keep fears in perspective - most crisis points are really not life or death, but I can choose to let my amygdala tell me they are, and that will not help Ask 'why is this so important?' when I feel myself becoming resistant and brittle in the winds of change - which of my assumptions about the world is being challenged? Get help - from a coach, a colleague or EAP One can always learn something new about being resilient!
