  13. ORCID and the Library’s Web Site • ORCID encourages research institutions to become members. • UCLA and CDL are members • Members can request ORCIDs for their researchers. • The researcher is notified by email that an ORCID has been created on their behalf. • Research can deny the ORCID with 10 days. • If no action in 10 days, the ORCID is valid. • Library web site uses Shibboleth authentication for students and faculty, and thus links University ID (UID) to the account. • Drupal module to register ORCID with the Drupal account, thus linking the ORCID to the UID.

  14. Open Access and the CDL • UC Faculty Senate approved open access policy. • California Digital Library (CDL) was charged to implement a system that allows faculty to comply with open access policy. • Selected Elements , a product by Symplectic Inc. • Elements has a powerful disambiguation engine. • Elements also accepts ORCIDs. • CDL configured Elements to include UID as an identifier.

  22. Batch ORCID Assignment Batch process • Drush script to use Drupal module API calls. • Input file: first name, last name, email, UID. • Allows for multiple email addresses. • First search for an ORCID: if found, link. • Otherwise generate an new ORCID and link. Plan • Librarians – August 2014 • CTSI faculty – September 2014 • Other departments during fall quarter.

  23. Future Ideas – no specific plans • Assign ORCIDs to graduate students. • Share ORCID-UID link to other campus organizations. • Identity Management • Payroll • Registrar • Look at ORCID Affiliation API • Currently, researcher claims affiliation. • Member organizations can verify affiliation and dates. Landscape is changing rapidly.
