  1. Think about what careers you are interested in or what do you want to be when you grow up. Some of you may know exactly what you want to do since you were like 5 years old. Others of you may have several careers that interest you. And some of you may have absolutely no idea what you want to do. Each of these answers to the question is totally OKAY and age appropriate. My hope is that today, as we go through the slides about your high school options that you find something interesting that you want to know more about.

  2. Thursday , March 26, 2020 6‐8pm High School Santa Fe Trail Middle School Options Fair All 7th grade students and their familes are invited! Find out more about the CTE Pathways, OATC 2‐Year Programs, and 21st Century Academies On Thursday, March 26 th , the week after spring break, there will be a High School Options Fair held at Santa Fe Trail Middle School from 6 ‐ 8pm. All 7 th graders and their families are invited to come. Staff and HS students from all of the High School Options will be at tables ready to talk to you and show demonstrations of what they do. The High School Options Fair is a great way to help you start making decisions about high school which will begin throughout first semester of 8 th grade. It is time to GET INFORMED as this time next year you will have already ENROLLED for high school. There will be childcare available.

Your BOUNDARY High School ‐ Comprehensive Education Core Content Classes Fine & Performing Arts Elective Classes Advanced Placement Dual Credit/College Now Academic Support eLearning Regardless of where an Olathe student attends high school they will receive a first class education. Typically, a student’s high school is based on where you live. This is called your BOUNDARY high school. So, if a student lives in the attendance boundary of Olathe East HS, the student would go to that high school. If they live in the attendance boundary of Olathe North HS, the student would go to that high school. All high school students receive a comprehensive high school education including • Core Content classes • Fine & Performing Arts programs – which are elective classes • Elective classes – all the classes you choose to take because you are interested or want to find out more about it. • Advanced Placement classes ‐ can become college credit by taking the national AP test at the end of the year • Dual Credit/College Now classes – in partnership with Johnson County Community College • Academic Support classes • eLearning options

  4. When students go to high school, they will be faced with a lot of options from different sports & activities, to classes they are required to take, and classes they want to take. In Olathe, we like to promote choice by providing a variety of options to choose from.

  5. Have you ever taken a Tech Ed class in Middle School? Have you ever taken a FACS class? Or How about a computer class or even a newspaper or yearbook class? These are all Career & Technical Education or CTE courses and fall within career pathways. These are the foundation for most of the elective choices in high school. Every high school has a variety of CTE pathways available.

Each pathway has multiple courses within them. If you decide to take the intro class and like it, you can take the second and third classes to learn more skills. If you complete three or more classes, you can earn what is called a “Completer Status” that goes on your HS transcript and makes you stand out. If you take an intro class and decide you don’t like it, no worries, you can choose a different pathway’s intro class to try it out. You may try out as many of them as you like. Just know that Completer Status comes from 3 credits in ONE pathway. Construction Trades Pathway: a career in architecture, construction, and skilled mechanical trades.These are the people who build and remodel houses, apartments, industrial buildings, warehouses, office buildings, churches, schools and recreational facilities. This pathway also includes the builders of highways, streets, bridges, tunnels and airports as well as power plants, chemical plants, refineries and mills. Employees in construction literally build our future! The Family, Community and Consumer Services Pathway focuses on careers relating to meeting the essential needs of people, especially occupations which focus on relationships between family members including family counseling, marriage therapy, non ‐ profit management and others related to helping people. Fashion, Apparel and Interior designers Pathway combine the principles and elements of design, production processes and maintenance techniques with the needs of humans to create 4 dimensional designs. People working in the Restaurant & Event Management Pathway—Culinary Arts & Management pathway work in management, marketing and operations of restaurants and other businesses or organizations with food service ‐ related areas. Courses offered may vary between schools. The Marketing Pathway is designed to prepare learners for careers and/or continuing education opportunities in planning, managing and performing marketing activities to reach organizational objectives. Students will learn skills in planning, managing, and performing marketing activities to reach organizational objectives such as brand management, professional sales, merchandising, marketing communications and market research.

  7. OATC is a career & technical high school for junior and senior students and are 2 ‐ year programs within CTE pathways.

OATC 2‐Year Animal Science & Research Aviation Electronics Programs Auto Collision Auto Technology Construction Trades Junior/Senior years Culinary Arts Health Careers & EMS Half day at home school Welding Technology Half day at OATC Apply in 10th grade These programs are where you take 3 courses in a CTE pathway each year for the last two years of HS. These are located at the Olathe Advanced Technical Center on the same campus as Olathe North HS. OATC is its own HS programming. If a student is part of an OATC program, they will attend OATC for 3 hours of the day and their boundary high school for the other 4 hours of the day. Transportation is provided free of charge if it is needed. Students are allowed to drive if they have access to their own car. These 2 ‐ year programs have an application process. Students would apply during 10 th grade in order to enroll for 11 th . Students would still be a part of their boundary school’s athletics and activities. Students in the Animal Science pathway will gain skills and knowledge in areas related to animal health and care focusing on Vet nursing or Vet tech. The Aviation Electronics Pathway helps prepare students with the knowledge and skills necessary for continued education and, ultimately, a successful career in Aviation Maintenance occupations. Electronics technicians apply electronic theory, electrical testing procedures and related knowledge to lay ‐ out, build, test, troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul electronic equipment. A technician might service the industrial controls on a factory floor, repair missile control systems for the government or specialize in cars and trucks, installing and repairing sound and alarm systems. The Auto Collision and Auto Technology Pathway prepares students for a variety of career opportunities in auto repair and customization and will learn through hands ‐ on experiences with
