Combustion Control
Parc Adfer Combustion Control Combustion Process • Combustion process requires three key elements: fuel, heat & oxygen • Once combustion is underway, it can be sustained by control of these inputs Exhaust Fuel Oil Heat Burner Heat Oxygen 12
Parc Adfer Combustion Control Primary & Secondary Phase Combustion Primary Phase: • Main combustion undertaken here • Injection of under-fire air to control and enable complete combustion on grate • Monitoring of grate furnace line and temperature Secondary Phase Secondary Phase: • Further combustions of particles within flue gas Primary • Injection of secondary and Phase tertiary air • Complete combustion of particles within flue gas 13

Parc Adfer Combustion Control Understanding Combustion Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a node software simulation of a process in a defined system. • The system can be a component, area or fluid defined typically by computer aided design (CAD) drawing • The boiler furnace has been used for Parc Adfer • The system is divided into individual nodes • The modeling applies typically to equations of fluid motion and thermodynamics to understand the interaction of each node • The simulation is started and the equations are solved iteratively as a steady-state or transient 15
Parc Adfer Combustion Control Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Boiler combustion involves simultaneous fluid flow, chemical reactions and heat and mass transfer. CFD is a software simulation of the allowing estimation of: • Flue gas flow profile across the boiler • Flue gas temperature profile • Flue gas velocity profile • Impacts of combustion air • Performance at different boiler conditions 16
Parc Adfer Combustion Control CFD Modelling for Parc Adfer Improves boiler design • Confirm boiler material selection against flue gas conditions • Check impact of changes to combustion air and grate operation • Confirm stable operation at different load conditions 17
Parc Adfer Combustion Control CFD Modelling for Parc Adfer Environmental Permit Requirement (850˚C @ 2 seconds) • Conditions are set by the Industrial Emissions Directive • Demonstration through modelling submission to NRW during design • Demonstration during commissioning and performance testing to confirm compliance 18
