  27. Which instrument should I choose? • Y7s – ask yourselves these questions….. • Which instrument do you like the sound of? • What kind of music do you like? • What kind of person are you ? • Which instrument your ‘heart sing?’... Remember…. • Learning an instrument is great fun and real asset… but it does require committed practice!

  28. ‘Endangered’ instruments in the UK • Some instruments are in short supply! • Viola and Double Bass • Oboe, Bassoon • Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn Benefit of learning these? Fairly immediate access to external orchestras/bands/ensembles Feeling ‘special’ as a player – always in demand!

  29. ‘Endangered instruments’ at AGGS.. • WE NEED YOU at AGGS to play one of these...... • Any brass instrument ! Cornet, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba • Some wind instruments- Flute Clarinet Oboe and bassoon • Percussion

  30. ‘Endangered instruments’ at AGGS.. • WE NEED YOU at AGGS to play one of these...... • Lower strings - • Viola, cello, double bass

  31. What if your child is really musical? • Encourage them to learn 2 instruments – though we do suggest just learning one in school and one out of school, unless your child is exceptionally organised to cope with catching up with work missed. • Piano/guitar – ability to play harmony – to compose in a more ‘complete way’ • Choose another instrument based totally on their love of the sound/type of music this will lead to ..... • AND – SING ! Massively develops aural skills, sight reading and is great fun to sing in a choir

  32. Looking after your instrument/insurance • Instrumental cases MUST be named ! ....outside and inside of case – contact details • Tie a ribbon around the case handle – make it easy to recognise • Instruments must be insured - add the instrument to your house insurance policy • Instruments must be taken home each night....to practice!

  33. Limited spaces – piano,saxophone • Piano (just 3 spaces) • Saxophone (3 spaces) • Flute (4 spaces) • So try taking up clarinet...bassoon….….oboe…cello....double bass....trumpet…..trombone….French horn…drum kit….orchestral percussion ….guitar etc…instead!

  34. • Complete the application form to apply for lessons – send to Mrs K Butt at the latest by Friday 26th June • Kbutt@aggs.bfet.uk What next? • Students will be assigned an instrumental teacher by the end of this term • Your child's instrumental teacher will contact you by phone/email at the latest by the 1 st week of Sep • A time and place to meet up will be arranged by their instrumental teacher – Y7s to bring planners with them • I meet with all Y7s during the first week to check they have their 1st lesson time

  35. Rotation of lessons – Please read! • 10 day – 2 week cycle of school lessons • One weekly 30 min instrumental music lesson • Students have their instrumental lesson rotated as evenly as is possible – and are rotated out of any lesson • Students need to be organised to catch up with the 30 mins of work they have missed (from their 60 min class lesson)

  36. Rotation of lessons – Please read! • Most Y7 instrumental lessons take place during the normal school day – ie in an academic lesson • Lunchtime/after school/before school instrumental lesson slots are prioritized for girls in Y10 and above • This does work well – your child will learn good organisationial skills! • Instrumental teachers are very empathetic to the girls and will try to reorganize lessons if there is a good reason – and they are given at least one

  37. Learning an instrument outside of school • Another option for your daughter • Why? Very occasionally organization of timetable rotation proves difficult for your daughter to manage – girls can still access extra-curricular music clubs • Why better to learn in school? Travelling time to external lesson/finding a good teacher sometimes difficult – easier for parents. • And we have a highly experienced, incredibly talented instrumental teachers here at AGGS !

  38. Remote learning on an instrument • Currently instrumental lessons are taking place remotely – on zoom. • These are working extremely well with all the instrumental teachers and AGGS students making excellent progress, with more time to practice at home! • Y7 new starters are welcome to arrange learning an instrument remotely THIS TERM if the instrumental teacher can arrange – ie before September.

  39. What next? Complete an instrumental application form online at the latest by Friday June 26th Return by email to kbutt@aggs.bfet.uk Ms Mayall (Head of Music) will forward your application to the relevant music teacher who will contact you to arrange lessons.

  40. What could I do that is musical over the summer holidays?
