Transition Programs • Curriculum night for parents • Orientation programs for students • Articulation meetings between elementary and middle school • 6 th grade counselor will sit on all CSE/504 meetings at the elementary level • Summer orientation for all incoming 6 th graders at the end of August (students will receive their lockers) • Classroom guidance activities in the fall • 1 st week of school: Welcome to RMS!! • Grading grace for quarter 1
Role of the Counselor • Advise students/parents on academic planning • Facilitate parent-team conferences • Counselor is member of each 6 th grade team • Provide direct counseling services to individuals and groups • Provide classroom guidance lessons on topics such as career exploration, goal setting, bullying, etc.
Meeting with your Counselor Students can meet with their counselor: v Before School v During Lunch v After School Lunch Groups: v All students are invited, beginning in the fall, to participate in lunch groups. v Each group meets during lunch periods once a week for a 6-8 week period. v Groups include: book club, study skills, current connections, scrapbooking.
Teams A “Team” consists of the School Counselor and the following teachers: • English • Math • Science • Social Studies • Special Education Teams share/disseminate information, plan curriculum, and facilitate parent- team conferences .

6 th Grade Courses All 6 th graders will take the following core classes: ü Math 6 ü English 6 ü Social Studies 6 ü Science 6 ü Alternate Day Physical Education ü Introduction to a World Language (Spanish, French, Italian or Mandarin Chinese)
6 th Grade Courses Continued 6 th graders will also take the following exploratory courses: ü Art 6 ü Coding 6 ü Digital Citizenship 6 ü FACS (Family and Consumer Science) ü Music Elective 6
6 th Grade Choices Middle School should be an enjoyable time for your child. To ensure you make the best class selections, take some time to discuss the following choices with your child: • French, Italian, Mandarin Chinese or Spanish (Must choose 1 and an alternate) • Band*, Chorus, Orchestra*, or Musicology (Must choose 1) • Option of Lunch Chorus ( Band or Orchestra students ) * Previous experience is required
