District Demographics The District Serves the Communities of San Mateo and Foster City • 20 Schools: Transitional Kindergarten – 8 th Grade – 12 Transitional Kindergarten sites – 15 elementary schools (K-5) – 2 K-8 campuses – 3 middle schools (6-8) • 12,000 TK-8 students • 500 preschool students • Class size ratio is 24:1 in grades TK/K-3, 30:1 in grades 4-8 3

  8. What Will You See & Hear in Kindergarten? Kindergarten is all about exploring, engaging, and questioning. – Teacher meeting with small groups – Students working individually, in pairs, and in small groups – Students having fun and encouraging each other – Hands-on activities inside and outside the class – Making connections between what they learn in class and see in the world 8

What is Transitional Kindergarten? • Same calendar and similar schedule as Kindergarten • For the 2019-2020 school year, if a child turns 5: • On or before September 1, 2019: Kindergarten • September 2 – December 2, 2019: TK • On or after December 3, 2019: not eligible for K or TK ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ • Current TK classes are located at: Audubon, Baywood, Brewer Island, Foster City, George Hall, Highlands, Laurel, LEAD, Meadow Heights, Parkside Montessori (transfer lottery only), San Mateo Park, Sunnybrae • TK students are eligible to attend the Annex Program • Same registration and transfer process as Kindergarten 9

Teachers & Curriculum • Transitional Kindergarten is taught by SMFCSD credentialed teachers • TK is intended to give young learners a head start and provide them with an opportunity to learn and grow • TK curriculum is a blend of the California Kindergarten standards and the CA Preschool Foundations for 5 year-olds • The TK classroom environment provides more opportunities for social-emotional and language development through interactive, hands-on activities 10

  11. Teachers & Curriculum What is the difference between K and TK? • TK’s main focus is social emotional and speaking and listening. • Academics are taught in a developmentally appropriate way. 11

Preparing for Registration Age Requirements - Eligibility (Handbook page 4) • Students are eligible to enroll in Kindergarten if their 5th birthday is on or before September 1, 2019 • Students are eligible to enroll in Transitional Kindergarten if their 5th birthday falls on or between September 2 – December 2, 2019 • Students who turn 5 on December 3 or after, are not eligible to enter Kindergarten or TK this school year - they will enter in 2020-2021 – Ed Code, no exceptions 15

  16. STEP 1: School of Assignment STEP 1: Determine your child’s school of assignment • To find your child’s school of assignment: www.smfcsd.net → Registration & Enrollment → School Assignments • All students in the District are assigned to a school based on their address of residency. 16

  17. Step 2: Registration Documents STEP 2: Collect all required registration documents • Required registration documents must be complete and up-to-date in order to be accepted by the school office 17

Registration Documents REGISTRATION DOCUMENTS (Handbook pages 5 & 6) ● Child’s original birth certificate or passport ● Child's original, up-to-date immunization record - www.ShotsForSchool.org ● Child's original Report of Health Examination for School Entry (encouraged at Kindergarten but not required until 1st grade) ● Parent identification - driver license or other photo I.D. ● Proof of Residency Group One (select one): ○ Current rental/lease agreement listing the parent/guardian name, student name(s), and name of property manager/owner and telephone number ○ Current property tax bill ○ Current homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy ○ State or federal tax return with a W-2 attached (please remove social security number and income information from these documents before submitting) ○ Payroll/check stub with name and address ● Proof of Residency Group Two (select one): ○ Current utility bill (e.g. PG&E, telephone, water, garbage, or cable TV), must be dated within the past 60 days. New residents will have 30 days following registration to bring in a utility bill. 18

Step 3: Document and Address Verification STEP 3: Bring all required registration documents to the school of assignment for document and address verification • The new student registration process begins with document and address verification at your child’s school of assignment in November • Be sure to check the school of assignment’s website for their scheduled document verification dates/times • Present originals of the registration documents as well as one set of copies if possible to the school of assignment

Step 4: Snapcode STEP 4: Obtain a 15-character snapcode from the school of assignment after document and address verification • Parents/guardians will receive a unique 15-character code, called a snapcode , after their registration documents have been verified by school office staff • Parents/guardians will use their snapcode to access and complete the PowerSchool online registration form. • Please note: the snapcode is unique to each child, and it is the expectation that all families are responsible for recording and remembering their child’s snapcode . 20

Step 5: Online Registration Step 5: Fill out and submit the PowerSchool online registration form to complete the registration process • The PowerSchool online registration form opens on Monday, December 3, 2018 at 12:00 pm (noon) – This is the first day online registration is available • The priority registration window is between December 3 (noon) and December 20, 2018 (4:00 pm) • www.smfcsd.net → Registration & Enrollment → How to Register for the 2019-2020 School Year → 2019-2020 PowerSchool REGISTRATION ENGLISH / ESPAÑOL

Online Registration • You will enter your child’s unique 15-character snapcode to log into PowerSchool, create a PowerSchool account, and complete and submit your child’s registration. • Tips: – Create an email account well before the online registration window opens if you do not have one already. – You will need to create a PowerSchool account after entering your child’s snapcode into PowerSchool. • You must have your own email account in order to create a PowerSchool account. – Hold your cell phone or tablet in landscape to access and fill-out the form. – Read the directions, follow the order of the questions, take your time ! 23

  24. Online Registration • Registration is considered complete only after you have entered and submitted all information into PowerSchool. • You will receive an email confirming the PowerSchool online registration form was submitted . 24
