Successful Transition Between a Female and Male Hockey Team Heriot-Watt Hockey Club
Ethan 19 Year old Male Brewing and Distilling Hockey
Rules – Scottish Hockey/BUCS • No Scottish Hockey Policy • Refer to English Hockey Policy • Out of date – written around 2010. • BUCS also referred to English Hockey Policy
2016/17 Start of Semester 1 • Flagged as a potentially vulnerable individual • Situation quickly came to light due to Ethan’s openness about his transition. • No hormone treatment • Meeting between E+D Exec and LGBT officer and Ethan – decided to play ladies hockey for year 1.
Mens v Ladies Hockey • Safety • Least likely to be assaulted • Least likely to be harassed • Current relationships with members • Had not started hormonal treatment
Mid 2016/17 • Generally happy consensus at mid semester check in with 2016/17 club president. • Ethan playing W1s. • Common knowledge amongst club – Ethan was very open about the beginning of his journey.
End of 2016/2017 • Ethan expressed that he had started hormone treatment and wished to play Male hockey next semester. • Applied for SU intern position – successful. • Applied for SU Ambassador position – successful.
Summer 2017 • Review of England Hockey Gender Policy – added clarity. Scottish Hockey references this. • Aug 2017 – 4 months on Testosterone Treatment • Obvious changes – sound, build, facially.
Oriam • Gender neutral toilets • Cubicles in changing rooms • Private showers (gender neutral) • Willing to learn and improve facilities
End of S1 2017/18 • Ethan played 3 games for M2s • Has attended 80% of training sessions • Large pool of players – very competitive team to play for. • Increased physicality and speed compared to W1 – Ethan is managing.
“ As heads of the Hockey committee we are honoured to help Ethan throughout the transition and are happy to help him in any way the he sees fit. It’s a privilege that Ethan feels comfortable enough at our club to express himself in mind and on the pitch” Matt Burton, HWUHC Club Coordinator 2017/18
Learning Points • Pronouns • Apologising • Looking for improvements • Confidence to suggest options while keeping integrity of club • Heriot-Watt are not trailblazers!
