  2. con·ser·va·tion /ˌkänsərˈvāSH(ə)n/ Noun -the action of conserving something, in particular. -reduction of any utility, energy or monetary expenditure

  3. Monthly Utility Outlays and Conservation  Lighting  Reduction, S cheduling, Retrofits  HVAC Operations  Time of day schedules, seasonal adj ustments, settings, retrofits  Water/ S ewer  Quick repairs, preventative maintenance  Irrigation  S easonal scheduling, quick repairs, preventative maintenance  Waste Removal

  4. Waste Removal  Classroom/ Office Waste  Mix of paper and non-recyclables  Cafeteria/ Kit chen areas

  5. Cafeterias/ Kitchen Areas  Food Waste  Non-recyclables  Recyclables  And lots and lots of air

  6. Traditional Cafeteria Waste Disposal  Assuming disposable trays, students deposit their trays and all waste into a 40 gallon trash bin.  By volume, most of what goes out is air.  Assuming you’ re not using compactors, you’re paying for trash companies to haul air.

  7. Mansfield IS D’s S hake and S tack  S tudents dump the contents of their trays into a waste bin  S tudents then stack their trays neatly (“ nesting” )  It’s “ j ust that easy” .  This single change could reduce your trash volume by up to 80%

  8. S hake and S tack (+Recycling)  S tudents empty their recyclable containers (cans, water bottles, milk/ j uice cartons) into the trash or a bucket  S tudents deposit recyclables into a recycling bin  S tudent dump the remaining contents into a waste bin  S tudents then stack their trays neatly

  26. Wylie IS D’s S tory In the fall of 2016, S tudent Nutrition Director introduced the EP A ’s Food Recovery Challenge as part of its S ustainable Materials Management Program. The challenge targets reducing “ food print” and reducing food waste in half by the year 2030. https:/ / www.epa.gov/ smm Wylie IS D enrolled in t he program by 2017.

  27. With members of the energy management team, Wylie IS D set out to get baseline measurements out of each of its school cafeterias. Measurements were collected for liquid and solid waste. Y es… a week of dumpster diving!
