Models for development of villages/districts for enhancing Agriculture productivity • Village adoption model with multiple services - by UPL • Reference Farms models- With ripple affect in adjoining cluster villages for key crops by Syngenta • Agriculture entrepreneurs model – covering large number of small and marginal farmers by Syngenta 6
Model 1 Villages adoption 7
‘ Seven’ Ways to double farmers income • Support in increasing productivity and higher cropping intensity • Provide cost-efficient services; advisory, mechanization, storage facilities • Moving to high value crops • Primary handling of horticulture produce • Link farmers with markets/corporate procuring to enable higher remuneration • Improve income by allied sources • Weather risk insurance
Selected Village Clusters • Maharashtra • Village Sai Kheda-Khurd cluster- cotton crop, District Yavatmal • Village Kaulkhed cluster- cotton crop, District Akola • Rajasthan Village Jhalawar cluster- citrus crop, District Jhalawar, Rajasthan

Key objectives of the project is to make crops more efficient, improve farmland practices, help biodiversity and safe & judicious of crop protection products What is being done • Training on Soil health. Collection of soil samples and Soil health analysis from reputed laboratory. • Advise on fertilizer use as soil health • Training on pests and diseases and designed crop protocol. • Training on safe and judicious use and Biodiversity practices. • Educating about safe pesticide storage of Crop protection products • Safe disposal of empty containers by linking to local expert agencies. • Advise on border plants to avoid soil erosion and increase pollination By 2020, productivity and income of these farmers under reference will be measured
Model 3 Developing Agri-entrepreneurship for productivity Improvement of small and marginal farmers 15
It is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘ creation ’ Project for creating & nurturing • agri entrepreneurs • Create opportunity for smallholders to enhance their productivity by right use of knowledge and technology • Contribute to food security Improving socio economic conditions of small and marginal farmers
Service at the doorsteps for all round agriculture knowledge and technology • More than 80% Indian farmers have <2 hectares • 50% have minimal access to Knowledge, Inputs & Technologies (KITs) • In 2012 Project Nirmiti was conceived - Project started in most backward districts of Orissa, Assam and Jharkhand - People with good agronomy knowledge, expertise about local conditions and passion to work with rural communities were appointed as agri-entrepreneurs - KITs were provided to small farmers in remote areas thru Agri entrepreneurs
From concept to reality Translating the concept of Project Nirmiti to reality was a huge learning experience ……. Nirmiti - how it works Syngenta develop Agri. entrepreneurs Center of Excellence Farmers receive agri-entrepreneurs, register farmers, (CoE) stocks and KITs at their conducts support with supplies doorstep and grow training in crop knowledge, inputs and products/services their productivity solutions, campaigns technologies against orders and income and capability development Conducts campaign, gets orders and makes available KITs Crop solutions Soil testing Farm tools and equipment
Project Nirmiti- our ambition Million plus Ensure “self-sustainability” smallholders Replicate & scale-up across geographies Establish sustainable business model pilots in 100,000 smallholders smallholder geographies aimed at enhancing 10,000 farmer yield and income smallholders 2013-2015 2016-2017 The project has been scaled-up to • 3 states in 23 districts, 1,725 villages with an outreach of >64,000 smallholders through a network of 450 well trained and equipped Agri entrepreneurs • Collaboration of Syngenta, Agri entrepreneurs and smallholders • Productivity of rice farmers increased by 57% and profitability by 40%
What people say When I began following the complete Syngenta protocol with support from the Nirmiti Team, a miracle happened! I got 35 quintals per acre from my plot which had till last year not given more than20 quintals of output! The resulting crop got readily accepted in the market due to its superior quality. I am also thankful for the agronomy knowledge, pest management techniques and mechanization knowhow given to me by the Nirmiti team. Chakradhar Giri Nirmiti Farmer, Odisha, IND I am extremely happy that I am getting quality input and knowledge at the doorstep. Diganta Das, Farmer, Lakhimpur-Assam It is an honor to be a partner in Nirmiti where thrust is on the development of smallholders whom we will be depending on for our future food supplies.
