Why is spelling important? • Life long learners • But won’t they just be using technology to help them spell in the future? • Secondary school ready • Reducing Cognitive Load – The brain can only do so much at a certain time (Sweller) – Cognitive Load Theory says that because short-term memory is limited, learning experiences should be designed to reduce working memory ‘load’ in order to promote learning.

Supporting Individual Need • Some children may have personalized spelling lists • These are in the cases where a child has a specific need with spelling • This will be when a child is not able to access age-appropriate spellings
Supporting at Home • Take note of the Dragon ABC – There are supporting documents which should help you remind the children of the rule they’ve been learning • Support children with spelling • Ask children about the rules and patterns
