Unified Communications Project Overview August, 2016
INTRODUCTION The ROLM phone system in use by Columbia University is a legacy system that no longer meets the University’s reliability and maintainability requirements and does not provide a modern feature set. While the Netphone system has played an important role in bridging the gap, significant development would be required to reach feature parity with commercial offerings. The objective of this effort is to produce a viable strategy for replacing our existing voice platforms with a modern Unified Communication system.
GOALS • Retirement of the legacy ROLM Phone System • Retirement of the Netphone VoIP System • Migration of DID's from Verizon Centrex • A single platform that provides all telephony and contact center capabilities • The introduction of a Unified Communication (UC) feature set (e.g. presence, chat, video conferencing) • Support for soft phone clients (e.g. mobile apps), allowing global reachability via cellular and Wi-Fi networks.
GOALS (cont.) • The integration of voice and video services with the university's preferred productivity suites (Google Apps and Microsoft Office 365) • Improved call quality and usage analytics • High Availability (Continuous Availability): Redundancy supporting off-campus service when main campus systems are offline
