Different shades of black and white in an image • Shades of black and white in an image depend upon the tissue reflectivity of the ultrasound beam • There is very little reflection from the fluid, hence the image will be black (anechoic), like blood, urine or amniotic fluid • There is highest reflection from the bones, hence the image will be bright white (hyperechoic), like a human skull, vertebra • There is variable reflection from the soft tissues, hence the image of the soft tissues will be in different shades of grey, like human brain
