How does PTA meet its purpose? (hint: We’re busy!) Ongoing PTA Operations… What does the PTA do? ● Advocating for Tyler in the wider community ○ City-wide education events to increase visibility of Tyler successes and causes ○ Direct communication with city administration and leaders, DGS, council, etc. ○ Connecting Tyler to the surrounding Capitol Hill community ○ Meeting with other PTO/PTA’s in Ward 6 and city for Feeder Discussions and Advocacy of Tyler ● Building community for our children ○ Events: 4th July Parade, Harvest Festival, Kiddie Cabaret, Laps Around Lincoln, etc. ○ In school outreach to connect parents to build a tight knit community around Tyler ○ Supporting Open Houses, Community Nights, back-to-school, etc. ● Supporting our educators ○ Mini-Grant program that funds teacher led efforts and supports teacher needs directly ○ Teacher Appreciation events and donation ○ Liaison between teachers and parental volunteers- connecting energy and fundraising ● Obtaining grants and grant programs ○ Annie’s Homegrown ○ Outdoor classroom ○ OSSE Farm Field Trips ○ Outdoor classroom signage grant ○ And more... ○ CHCF Small group reading and Math
Ongoing PTA Operations… What does the PTA do? ● Advocating for parents ○ Communicating parent’s concerns and interests to the school administration ○ Liaison for parents, connecting new DCPS parents with those who have years of experience ○ Encouraging enrollment at Tyler ○ Working with DGS, DCPS, and the city council, to improve the Tyler building and grounds as an ongoing effort ● Improving the educational experience for children ○ Bringing Food Prints to Tyler: hands-on gardening and cooking with science, math and language arts standards in our school so that children get excited about growing, preparing, and enjoying fresh, local, whole foods ○ Funding for classroom enhancement when requested by teachers ● Outdoor Classroom (aka The Playground) ○ Gardens and plantings have been, and are currently, PTA and FoodPrint efforts ○ The current playground equipment was obtained by a PTA initiative and fundraising years ago, and we are starting conversations now for an upgrade in lieu of being on the city’s modernization schedule
Ongoing PTA Operations… What does the PTA do? ● Communication and School Image ○ Tuesday Tyler Times is a PTA activity ○ The Tyler Website, Twitter, and FB, are PTA activities ○ Tyler “image” many posters, flyers, graphics, created by our communications ○ Tyler T-shirts- are an all volunteer effort ○ Promotion of Tyler in the community ● Fundraising ○ The Alchemy of Great Taste: $20K last year, $25K goal this year ○ Sales: Bake sales, picture sales, t-shirts: $5300 last year, $6K goal this year ○ Events: Pancake Breakfast through Laps around Lincoln: $6400 last year, $7K goal this year ○ Loyalty programs: $454 last year, we can get $1,000 this year ○ The more we raise the more we can do!

New PTA Goals for 2017-2018... To Start ● Funding the signature theatrical arts programs - connecting community ○ $5,000 minimum funding to the Spanish Film Club in the budget for this year ○ Work with the Spanish Film Club team to establish it as a Program with established organization ○ $5,000 minimum funding to the Student Musical in the budget for this year ○ Find ways to creatively expand arts program to Early Childhood Education and Special Education students ● Improving communication and transparency ○ Useful, updated, and available PTA information: Such as a calendar that includes all school activities and PTA events, school information, etc. ○ A publically posted budget, fundraising targets, and funds raised throughout the year ○ Make documentation about Tyler and the PTA available to future PTA Boards ○ Communicate PTA and School Administration initiatives to parents to the best of our ability ● Provide stronger inputs to the DCPS Ward 6 Strategic Plan, Feeder Schools, and advocate for the interest of Tyler students in upper schools: ○ Work more closely with organizations and CHSPO to advocate for Tyler students ○ Engage with efforts around dual-language education and Jr High feeders ○ Engage directly with the Office of Strategic School Planning for DCPS ○ Act as an ACTIVE voice in Ward 6 Planning and post 5th Grade feeder programs
New PTA Goals for 2017- 2018… More ● Improve cafeteria contractor relationship and in doing so improve food at Tyler ○ Continue work done with Sodexo to improve the Tyler Cafeteria ○ Advocate for better food options on the regular menu ● Engage DC Government to accelerate building renovation plans - the next stage of modernization ○ Advocate for facility improvements including playground equipment (pushing for renewed city investment) ● Crowdfund for new water fountains to improve access to water ○ Working out the final confirmation from DGS regarding their lack of upgrade plans to ensure that we need to go through the effort of fundraising additional $6-10k ● Get more grants for Tyler - and raise more money to give more to the school ● Your next great idea ○ Your ideas for making your child’s school better go here! ○ We realize that we will adapt over this school year
Fundraising ● A core principle of the Tyler PTA is “access for all.” we keep our fundraising events accessible, and reasonably priced ● We typically raise $40K per year (that’s a good year for Tyler fundraising) ● Other schools in surrounding Capitol Hill typically raise $200K or more per year ● With more funding PTAs are able to provide more improvements to a school: ○ Playground improvements ○ Kitchen improvements ○ Even additional staffing support for the school ○ Improved recess and aftercare monitoring ● A goal of our large fundraising events is to raise money from people and businesses outside of Tyler Parents ● Without relying on several hundred dollars from each Tyler family, we bring money in from the larger community to improve our school
