GARDEN Garden Committee Head-Karly Lin karly.lin@gmail.com 2 amazing organic Gardens at the school, one next to MS school building and another larger garden inside Gantry State Park (by Rainbow Park) Completely run and funded by the efforts of parents and volunteer Currently, the garden is not a part of the regular curriculum. There is a lot of potential to develop school programs and activities around the garden. We need your for advocacy, fundraising/grant writing, organizing events, planning new programs, coordinating parents/volunteers, maintaining the garden, and more. Please sign up today! We really need more parent involved. Partnering up SchoolFood, Grow To Learn, and GrowNYC’s Greenmarket to provide a nutritional testing menu during lunch period with vegetables and herbs harvested from our school garden or local farms on select days.
Recess MythBusters Old recess situation: Kids went our 2-3 times a week after lunch. Kindergarten has one extra full period of recess per week in addition to the rotating schedule. Issues: Time = 45 minutes THE SCHEDULE IS NOT CHANGING 2 school buildings that have lunch/recess at the same time We must flip-flop lunch/recess Non-attached playgrounds In the ECC the current playground can only hold 54 kids, still working on closing 48 th street adjacent to the school to create adjacent play areas Handball courts can be used if necessary, but the travel time cuts into playtime. We currently have 7 school aides working daily. The administration is not going to spend money on more staff, as there are many other things to pay for, ie foreign language teachers, music instruments, etc. It takes 7 KO Staff plus 4 school aides and learning leaders to make daily recess happen for the entire school
Recess Myth Busters Recess Staffing: Kids Orbit is $80K for 7 staff members Hiring 7 new aids (4 hours each daily) is $140K Gantry Kids $140K Hopes: To get funding from Elected Officials in the district for next year/grants BOTTOM LINE: The ONLY way daily recess happens this year is if we pay for Kids Orbit! $80K/650 students =$123/student It’s your decision: Is $120/per child worth it for daily recess?

Fundraising Context Ø The best schools in the city raise over 500k through their PTA in order to pay for additional teachers, better facilities, enrichment and educational opportunities for their children. Ø Our PTA raised <$ 200k in past years Ø We live in an amazing neighborhood that reflects our borough’s best of diversity, culture, arts, business and environment. Our school should reflect the values and opportunities of our home. Ø Our goal is for our school become a cutting edge, well-resourced, environment that nurtures, challenges, and cultivates our children to their fullest potential. Ø We need to build a culture of giving and supporting our community.
