Tidal Energy Amrit Rakhra, Jamina Sawal, Diya Sammi, Tyson Van Dyke, Reet Sandhu
What are the details of this process?
Where is this viable? Already in use?
What are the reasons for considering this? - Clean/Green - Renewable - Low cost to run - Reliable/Predictable - Long lifespan - Coastal protection - Effective at low - Reduces foreign - Less use of electricity speeds importation of fuel - High potential
What are the environmental costs/concerns? Large negative impact on marine ecosystems Early research indicates tidal stream turbines do much less damage. ● By building a dam, changing tidal flows, aquatic and shoreline ecosystems are compromised. ● Sound of machinery(generator) under the ocean, effects lot of sea life on their health, habitat and source of ● food because most of the marine species rely on earth’s magnetic fields Many ecosystems along the land/ocean margins are compromised every year ●
What are the economic costs/concerns? So tidal energy costs above 20 cents USD per KWH (kilowatt-hour). Tidal power is expensive because technology required to convert tidal energy into electricity is very similar to the technology used in traditional hydroelectric power plants. The first requirement is a dam or “barrage” across a tidal bay or estuary. Building dams is an expensive process. Main concern of tidal energy is the potential of generating electricity from marine tidal currents is enormous. Tidal energy is a renewable source that has an additional value in a future energy market with regard to other renewable energy sources.
What are your conclusions about the prospects of this source of energy? Useful source as it is renewable of electricity
