What is a Modern Apprenticeship? • Modern apprenticeships were introduced in Scotland in 1994 • They were designed to recapture some of the strengths of the traditional apprenticeship • The most significant difference between the modern apprenticeship and the traditional apprenticeship was that it was not to be of a fixed duration
A Powerful Model of Learning • A Modern Apprenticeship is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and judgement required in the workplace • The term “Apprenticeship” is used in many occupations
Frameworks and Levels • There are more than 100 MA frameworks on offer • Modern Apprenticeships are available from SVQ Level 2 through to SVQ Level 5 • Depending on the industry, there may be a requirement to undertake an industry related technical certificate • Other qualifications may be undertaken during an apprenticeship
Modern Apprenticeship - Rates of Pay • The apprentice is an employee • Pay rates vary between sectors, regions and between different employers and they are subject to an annual review • There is an apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (NMW) which applies to all 16 – 18-year-olds and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship • The current 1 st year rate of pay is £3.30 per hour
