So Some e ne new w de defini initions tions to to be be familiar with… ASSESSOR the independent assessor who administers and grades the end-point assessment TRAINER the on-programme delivery provider ON-PROGRAMME the training period. This may include assessments, but these do not form part of the final Apprenticeship assessment unless specifically referenced in the Assessment Plan GATEWAY the suite of qualifications, training and achievement required to be able to attempt the end-point assessment

  5. End nd-point point As Asse sess ssme ment nt – wha what, t, who who, , ho how What: : high-level K-S-B will be assessed – these will be tested in the end-point assessment • The Assessment Plan specifically details the KSB elements of the Standard that will be tested • Not all of the Standard will be tested and the assessment may test more than the high-level K-S-B • But the end point assessment MUST contain the K-S-B declared in the What section of the Assessment Plan

  6. End nd-point point As Asse sess ssme ment nt – wha what, t, who who, , ho how Who: : Who are the assessors? Who will make the final decision? • Training providers work with employers in the on-programme phase. That means training providers deliver support so that an apprentice meets the gateway criteria and is prepared for end- point assessment components. • The term Assessor in the Assessment Plan refers to the independent assessor who administers the final assessment • The final decision on the Apprenticeship must be through an independent means (assessor, employer panel, professional body)

  7. End nd-point point As Asse sess ssme ment nt – wha what, t, who who, , ho how How: How will apprentices be assessed? What components will be used? • A component is the type of assessment to be used, such as a multiple-choice questionnaire, a practical observation or an interview • Most plans contain a knowledge test and a skills test • These are new and all apprentices will be unfamiliar with the new forms of assessment • These new components are currently untested and there are few preparatory resources available

  8. An example of an assessment plan… • 36 months on-programme training with a training provider • KSB in Standard • Mandatory Level 2 diploma taken during training • Health and Safety Certificate • English and Maths Level 1 (working towards Level 2) The he End nd-Poi Point nt Gatewa way • Level 2 Diploma certificate • H&S Certificate • L1 English and Maths • Employer considers training period complete – cleared to attempt the end-point assessment

  9. An example of an assessment plan… Assessment Area Assessed Assessed by Grading Weighting Method Knowledge One Hour Test (60 Questions) Independent (Refer) 30% Test Assessment Pass Refer (Less than 60% correct) Organisation Distinction Pass (60% or greater correct) Distinction (75% or greater correct) The knowledge test will use a multiple-choice questions format to assess underpinning and applied knowledge in elements of the standard. The underpinning questions will primarily cover the “how” and “why” elements of the content. Applied knowledge will use scenario type questions to assess the apprentice’s judgement and decision making. This knowledge will be tested by the assessment organisation , through centrally set and centrally marked multiple choice on-line examination. The examination will be administered by the independent assessor. Practical Candidates will undertake a practical assessment in the workplace, under the supervision and approval of Independent (Refer) 60% Skills Test an independent assessment organisation, who will undertake the standardised skills test in controlled Assessment Pass conditions. The skills test must be undertaken only under the instruction of an independent assessor to be Organisation Distinction considered a valid end-point assessment activity. The skills test will assess primarily the skills elements of the standard. Interview The apprentice will be interviewed by the independent Assessor immediately following the practical skills Independent Refer 10% and assessment. The interview will explore how the apprentice applied the specified skills, knowledge and Assessment Pass Professiona behaviours in the workplace, using the previously reviewed portfolio as the basis for the interview. The Organisation Distinction l Discussion interview will allow the apprentice to demonstrate that they understand what they have done, how they approached it, what problems they faced and how they dealt with them as well as how they communicated and applied their initiative. All knowledge and behaviours can be assessed in this component using a wide range of evidence sources including scenario based questioning and any candidate self-assessment, employer reports and the outcomes of the skills test, knowledge test and the portfolio. The professional dialogue will be undertaken at a mutually convenient venue and led by the independent assessor, usually on the same day as the end-point skills assessment. The independent assessor will then collate the results from the end-point assessment in order to confer a performance grade for the apprenticeship.
