The Internet: How To Be Safe and Smart 1
Who’s On The Internet? 2
You’re not alone! There are 3.5 BILLION people who are on the Internet in some form or fashion. That’s a LOT of people! 3
Why Should I Worry? 4
Did you know? • 86% of all identities stolen are from the United States. Info comes from trash at home and work, mailboxes and…the Internet • An identity is stolen every TWO seconds! 5 / Special Olympics Texas
Security Is The Key! Would it be easy for someone to guess your password? Would it be easy for someone to guess your answers to your security questions? Do you use a different password for each of your social media and email accounts? 6
Beef Up Your Security Make sure you have good UP-TO-DATE anti-virus software installed on your computer. Yes, it’s pricey. Yes, it’s worth it. Some internet service providers give you software to use. ASK! Consider getting a program that will make up super- secure passwords for you. Free ones include LastPass 4.0 and LogMeOnce. Subscription programs include Zoho Vault and LastPass Premium. 7
Security Is Important! With a name, address and date of birth, crooks are able to open bank and credit card accounts. They supplement info with fake documents. 8
Know Who You’re Ordering From Hackers make web pages to look like products/companies that we know, but they count on us being distracted and ending up on the wrong page Examples: Underarmor.info – should be underarmor.com Blakberry.com – should be blackberry.com 9 / Special Olympics Texas
Email Safety Never respond to email • from people or companies you don’t know. Never click links in email • from someone you don’t know. Only open attachments • from known senders. Beware of the FW:FW:, • even from people you know 10 / Special Olympics Texas

Who’s Out There? Who can see your posts/tweets/snaps? Everyone • Friends? • Friends of friends? • Why is that important? Profile has your name, your birthday, your home address (maybe), your • phone number (maybe), your email address, names of pets, relatives, photos…and the list goes on! Privacy settings Set your privacy settings to the most restrictive • 17 / Special Olympics Texas
Facebook Facebook is a social networking site that allows people to post comments, share photos and other info with friends. Some think it’s safer because you must “accept” friends. And it mostly is. BUT Many of those quizzes that seem fun actually contain malware that can allow hackers to gain access to your profile…and your computer. 18 / Special Olympics Texas
Twitter • Twitter is designed for people to communicate through “tweets” – messages that are no more than 140 characters long. Can contain photos, videos and links. 19 / Special Olympics Texas
Snapchat Snapchat allows a user to send videos and pictures that “go away” a few seconds after they are viewed. HOWEVER… 20
Instagram Instagram is a mobile photo and video-sharing networking service. Items can be shared publically or privately on the app and on other sites. 21

Do I know you? What do you do if you get a text or a direct message from someone you do not know? Should you allow someone you don’t know to follow you? We’re already friends. Why are you asking again? (scam alert!) 24 / Special Olympics Texas
