Introduction to the Bali Process n February 2002: Regional Ministerial Conference in Bali n Co-chaired by Australia and Indonesia n Committed to disrupting people smuggling and trafficking, and established a framework for future action n 2003: Second Ministerial Conference in Bali n Agreed to practical cooperation to combat people smuggling n Senior Officials review in 2004 n 47 countries and nine international organisations recommended a streamlined program for combating people smuggling
Bali Process Ministerial Objectives n More effective information and intelligence sharing; n Improved cooperation among regional law enforcement agencies; n Enhanced cooperation on border and visa systems; n Increased public awareness to discourage illegal activities; n Enhanced effectiveness of return as a deterrence from people smuggling; n Cooperation in identifying illegal migrants and trafficking victims; n National legislation to criminalise people smuggling and trafficking; and n Protection and assistance to victims of trafficking.
