I chose this entry as the Award of Excellence because it is an artistically-done, well-planned video that hits the mark in every way. The interviews were very nice and I thought the choice of edits to be conducive to telling the “story.” Videography was lush and music set the mood. Love that there was so much footage of worship and worship space. Great job. www.youtube.com/ watch?v=R-E7uE61efc

Video – Short-form , ultra-low budget Award of Excellence Christine McTaggert, Editorial Director Summerlee Walter, Videographer / Video Editor “A Pop-Up Video Interview with the (soon-to-be-Rt.) Rev. Whayne Hougland ” Diocese of North Carolina
This idea was outstanding and the content informative and creative. Execution was good, although the subjects should always be seen if we can hear them. The audio was clear and the video was a nice quality. The “Pop Up” idea appeals to a wide variety of viewers and I think this video was probably very well received (at least it SHOULD have been!) This kind of creative thinking trumps the little technical blips that you had. Creative, interesting content is what the Church needs more of. Bravo! www.youtube.com/ watch?v=1UU6KOu_Eu4&list =PL46C385DC17E97452&index=27

Writing - News Award of Excellence Solange De Santis, Co-Lead Jerry Hames, Former Editor “Hospital battered in Sandy’s wake” Episcopal Journal
This account of St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, which was battered while it served as a refuge for desperate people during Superstorm Sandy, is compelling and informative. The writer is following up a month or so after the storm with a story that not only recounts heroics but explains the financial burden this response placed on the small hospital. Little details, such as the hospital worker whose greatest need was for dry sneakers, bring it to life. It is a perfect story for this publication, which is dedicated to inspiring Episcopalians with stories of the life and ministry of the Episcopal Church.

Writing - Feature Award of Excellence Emily Cherry, Writer and Editor “The Fear-Not Business: Virginia churches battle–and beat–obstacles to live out mission” Virginia Episcopalian, Diocese of Virginia
Cherry demonstrates excellence in the balance she strikes among summary, description, and direct quotation. She knows when to put others’ ideas into her words and when to let her sources speak for themselves. When her colleagues in this crowded category performed a brand of “notebook dump,” Cherry selected. She trimmed. She put verbs and objects after subjects and arranged them neatly to create a well-swept pathway of readability. And then—I suspect—she trimmed some more. Cherry showed technical excellence infused with a voice that resonates. Nothing flashy or fancy, necessarily. Just good journalism.

Writing – Editorial/ Com m entary Award of Excellence David Dreisbach, Author “How do you sell a prune?” Interchange , Diocese of Southern Ohio
Who could have imagined how much the Episcopal Church can learn from the lowly prune? That’s the surprising lesson David Dreisbach offers us in his sprightly, insightful essay on how the marketing gurus turned prunes into dried plums. Within those threads of humor are the elements of an important point: The way in which we tell our story as a community of faith can make an enormous difference in whether we connect to the broader community. It’s an important, inspiring bottom line from a beautifully written essay.
