  4. Sustainable Fleets Accreditation Program

  5. A “LEED” for Fleets ● Originally developed w ith NAFA – nation’s m ajor fleet m anager organization – BY AND FOR FLEETS ● Sets a standard to m easure fleet progress against specific reduction targets – the “LEED” of Fleet ● Metrics: reduce fuel use ; reduce clim ate and criteria em issions ; increase efficiency ● Provides independent review of fleet progress – gives guidance on strategies – but encourages innovation 6

  6. WHAT MAKES A FLEET SUSTAINABLE A sustainable fleet is one w ho m anages and reduces net environm ental im pacts – at or ahead of the pace required for environm ental need by dem onstrating: • Im proved air quality through em ission reduction Increased fuel econom y • • Reduced fuel usage CALSTART sustainable fleet program provide fleets the tools and m ethods to help fleet m anagers m easure efficiency, fuel reduction w hile tracking im provem ents over tim e. The program serves as a guide to set the course tow ards continuous im provem ent

  7. TECHNOLOGY AND FUEL OPPORTUNITIES Pow ertrains Drivetrains Fuel Natural Gas Hydrogen Electricity Biodiesel Propane

  8. SUSTAINABLE FUEL NEUTRAL OPPORTUNITIES Transit agencies, fleets and private ow ners are looking to m axim ize fuel efficiency and reduce costs Today, there are num erous options for vehicle efficiencies: – Right Sizing – Operator Training – Idle Reduction – Vehicle Aerodynam ics – Vehicle Equipm ent – Vehicle Technology Vehicle efficiency isn’t just about your fuel and powertrain choice .

  9. DEVELOPING YOUR SUSTAINABILITY PLAN Fleets are responsible for developing a plan or w ork strategy docum ent for taking action steps over three or m ore years to m ake the fleet m ore sustainable. The plan should: Set a Goal: Establish sustainability as a fleet m anagem ent goal 1 ) Develop Sustainability m etrics: Establish a baseline w ith x% fuel 2) or em issions reductions or efficiency im provem ents in a tim e period range of 3 to 5 years. Measure: Establish m easuring m echanism s (m onitoring 3) tools/analytics) to track, benchm ark, and report on fleet fuel consum ption Initiate and Review : Kick off your plan and be sure to develop a 4) process for an internal annual review of sustainable fleet plan and policy

  10. BECOMING ACCREDITED Why become an accredited sustainable fleet through CALSTART/ NAFA? Recognition Build clean communities Showcase your sustainability leadership Improved air quality improves public health, and mitigates climate-related changes M easurable Improvements You set the strategy… Emissions and efficiency improvements with metrics … the program measures the results Accreditation Validation Getting started can be as simple as Your sustainability efforts will be validated by our submitting some simple fleet information independent and confidential organization

  11. WHAT IS NEEDED TO GET STARTED 1 . User Inform ation: basic fleet inform ation 2. Sustainable Fleet Plan: fleet creates this plan w hich sets goals and m easures success 3. Efficient Driver Training: show proof of efficient driving training and tracking m ethod 4. Idle Reduction: show proof of anti-idling policy and tracking/enforcem ent m ethod 5. Vehicle Fuel Tracking: show m ethod for tracking fuel usage 6. Fuel Data: track alternative fuel usage for baseline and reporting years 7. Baseline Year Data: vehicle class, year, fuel type, and m iles driven 8. Reporting Year Data: vehicle class, year, fuel type, and m iles driven All Data is 100% Confidential

  12. CHANGE IN FLEET DATA Baseline year data vs. Reporting year data determ ines the latest: ● Num ber of advanced technology vehicles ● Percentage of alternative fuel used ● Im provem ent in fuel econom y ● Im provem ent in air quality (NOx & PM) ● GHG em issions reductions

  13. SUSTAINABLE FLEET REPORT CARD

  14. TIERS AND SCORE M any M ethods for Earning Points! Tier 1 (>20 points): demonstrate Progress via actions/ reductions Tier 2 ( ≥40 Points) : demonstrate M eaningful actions / reductions Tier 3 ( ≥60 Points) : demonstrates Significant actions / reductions Tier 4 ( ≥80 Points) : demonstrate Outstanding actions / reductions

  21. WHAT SIZE AM I? Fleet m anagers should understand their fleets needs: – W hat are the vehicles used for? – W hat m ileage are the vehicles seeing? – Is there significant dow ntim e? – Is the vehicle fleet optim al? This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-ND Fleet Rightsizing is data driven decisions can help enable choices that can effect your overall fuel use, CO 2 footprint and TCO Rightsizing is not a once and done activity – Review, Right size and Repeat .

  22. BEHAVIORS DRIVE IMPROVEMENTS Behaviors and how vehicles are driven can m ake a big im pact quickly – Adm inistering proper tire m aintenance – Follow ing the speed lim it – Reducing or elim inating idling of vehicles – Avoiding sharp braking and accelerating Drivers and operators should be m ore m indful they are about driving as eco-friendly driving habits equate to m ore fuel savings The m ain com ponent for any change in driver behavior is alw ays the sam e: TRAINING

  23. STOP IDLING AND START SAVING BIG Idle reduction: lim iting the am ount of tim e that vehicles idle unnecessarily is a key strategy for increasing fuel efficiency and reducing petroleum use. – Establishing an anti-idling policy – Turning off engines w hen not in use – Start/Stop Technologies For vehicles that need pow er for non propulsion it gets m ore com plicated, how ever there are solutions: – Engine idle m anagem ent system s – Heaters for cab and/or engine block – Auxiliary pow er system s – Electrified parking spaces Idling in the US uses more that 6 billion gallons of fuel at a cost of more than $1 9 billion each year

  24. CONTROLLINGTHE AIR FLOW Heavy vehicles lose a trem endous am ount of energy from w ind resistance, braking, and rolling resistance Fleets and ow ner-operators should look for aerodynam ic solutions that cut fuel costs but do not increase m aintenance costs nor require driver attention and costly repairs. • Gap Reducer • Tail • Skirt • Under trailer • Aerodynam ic m irrors • Splash guard Aerodynamic losses can account for about a 45% decrease in efficiency
