  1. STVL Overview 27 April, 2008 Antwerp Matt Robshaw Orange Labs STVL Overview • STVL background and goals • STVL deliverables and events • STVL looking back (and forward) 1

  2. STVL Goals • The goal of STVL is to facilitate collaborative research in symmetric techniques – practical algorithm design and analysis – algorithm implementation and deployment – theoretical foundations STVL Participation • STVL receives contributions from 18 partners – 56% of all ECRYPT partners – 80% of all ECRYPT industrial partners • This helps to give STVL a strong practical focus 2

  6. Selected STVL Deliverables STVL Reports • Evaluation of the Advanced Encryption Standard – Comprehensive report on the AES to coincide with the 5th anniversary of standardisation • Open Problems in Symmetric Cryptography – Annual review of open research problems: latest revision to be completed in June 2008 • Report on Algebraic Cryptanalysis – Review of the state of algebraic cryptanalysis in symmetric cryptography: to be completed June 2008 6

  7. Other STVL Contributions • A portfolio of new stream ciphers (eSTREAM) – Potential for future standardisation and product deployment • Standards liaison and position papers • Research visits • STVL support to external events – Algebraic cryptanalysis seminars (University of Linz, Austria) STVL Workshops SASC 2004 Oct. 2004 98 SKEW Apr. 2005 88 Lightweight Crypto + RFID Jul. 2005 69 SASC 2006 Feb. 2006 95 Hash Functions Jun. 2006 46 SASC 2007 Jan. 2007 103 Hash Functions May 2007 70 Cryptanalysis Workshop Sep. 2007 52 SASC 2008 Feb. 2008 112 7

  8. STVL Summer Schools • Three joint STVL-AZTEC summer schools – A week of themed expert talks – Aimed at Ph.D. students, but also of broader interest STVL Tools 8

  17. Papers and Publications • 159 notes/papers uploaded to STVL – excluding papers posted to eSTREAM • > 30 papers in Springer proceedings – FSE, Eurocrypt, SAC, … STVL Focus Areas • This afternoon : – eSTREAM : Thomas Johansson (WG1) – Hash Functions : Vincent Rijmen (WG4) 17

  18. Closing • Many thanks to anyone contributing to STVL – Not only has there been significant research … … but there have been lasting practical advances • Much of STVL has a life beyond ECRYPT – eSTREAM (maintenance and portfolio review) – Hash function design and analysis – And most importantly: continued research and collaboration 18
