From Education Corner • Always include your sources • http://www.educationcorner.com/note-taking.html
Improving your notetaking • One key to success • Helps you remember what happened in class • Helps you pay attention during class • Helps you recognize where you need help
• Let’s practice
The marks on the notes • Use a circle for powerful words and phrases • Underline words and terms you do not know • Put a ? In the margin for a question you need to ask – even the next day • Use an arrow for information you also found in your textbook, or some other source
Make clear and accurate notes • Legible • Accurate • Detailed
Steps to get ready to take notes • Prepare for class • Bring the supplies you need: textbook, notebook, pens/pencils • You can’t take notes in the air • Complete your homework prior to class • Helps you know what the next topic will be • Use your notes to list questions from last class or homework
Compare your notes • About once a week • Definitely two days before a test *With someone you know takes good notes • See if either of you missed anything • Find a “ study buddy” especially for when you might be absent
Min inimize dis istractions • This allows you to focus on the teacher , the class, and the new material
Organize your notes • Each day you should start on a new page • Put the date at the top • This helps when studying for a test- the teacher may tell you that the test covers class material from a certain range of dates • It lets you recognize when you were absent and need to get notes. • Add the topic , or chapter title • A separate notebook
Leave blank space • At the end of the class • Allows you to make additions, corrections, and jot down questions
It is impossible to write every word • Learn how to decide what must go in your notes • If the teacher puts it on the board it must go in your notes • Some days will not be lecture /notetaking • Still put the date, the topic, and what happened • It is a chronicle , and a reminder • Some abbreviations , approved by your teacher, are appropriate • & is appropriate in your notes, but not appropriate in a written assignment or test • B4 is acceptable in notes, but not in an essay • You need to keep track of how you abbreviate
Don’t • Recopy your notes every night • Obsess about outline formatting • Indent for details under a main idea • Use bullet points • As we have done in this presentation
Do • Keep your notes in good order
