Study 25 Presentation The Story also talks about five movements that take part in God’s Story: Movement 1: The Story of the Garden (Genesis 1-11) Movement 2: The Story of Israel (Genesis 12 – Malachi) Movement 3: The Story of Jesus (Matthew – John) Movement 4: The Story of the Church (Acts – Jude) Movement 5: The Story of a New Garden (Revelation) Jesus, The Son of God Synoptic Gospels – they are similar and tell the story of Jesus in similar ways Matthew – the promised Messiah Matthew 1:1 (ESV) 1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Mark – the Son of God for all nations Mark 1:1 (ESV) 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Luke – an eyewitness account in an orderly fashion of who Jesus really is Luke 1:1-4 (ESV) 1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. Gospel of John – the rest of the story, details that the other gospels don’t give John 20:30-31 (ESV) 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Seven I Am statements John stressed Jesus’ claims of deity with His “I AM” statements (6:35; 8:12; 10:7, 9, 11, 14; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1, 5). I Am the bread of life (John 6:35, 41, 48) I Am the light of the world (John 8:12) I Am the door of the sheep (John 10:7, 9) I Am the good shepherd (John 10:11, 14)
I Am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25) I Am the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6) I Am the vine (John 15:1, 5) The Jews understood that Jesus was claiming to be God John 8:58-59 (ESV) 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. Timeless Truth: He is I Am The Son of Man = the Son of God Caesarea Philippi Strange place to take the disciples – located near the city of Dan but this was a Gentile area, only time we know that Jesus visited this place, area known for wicked idolatry – cult of Pan and other Greek deities, Who do you say that I am? Some say … You are the Messiah Messiah / Son of Man Job description – suffer, be rejected, die, rise again Peter’s rebuke – we know what Jesus should do Jesus’ rebuke of Peter – Satan “adversary” Disciple Our job description – deny yourself, take up your cross, follow Jesus Deny yourself – once and for all, die to yourself, “you are not your own, you were bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) Take up your cross – once and for all, true disciple identifies with the master, Jesus death and resurrection become our death and resurrection, Paul says that we have died to sin and been raised to new life Follow Jesus – daily, every day we renew our commitment to Jesus and our commitment to be like Him in every aspect of our life Transfiguration – the glory of the Son of Go d Peter, James and John – inner circle, included in experiences that didn’t involve all 12 High mountain Transfigured – heavenly glory, shines like the sun Moses and Elijah – law and the prophets, strengthen Jesus for what He will face Tabernacles – we know what Jesus should do, three tents to stay here God the Father’s rebuke – this is my Son, listen to Him Don’t tell anyone yet – “rising from the dead”, what does that mean? Teacher Job description – suffer, be rejected, die, rise again Disciples don’t understand – maybe we don’t know what Jesus should do Messiah? – not what they expected, looking for an earthly leader
Festival of the Tabernacles Important festival Watching for Jesus – Jewish officials and the crowds – Where is he and who is he? Last day – greatest day of the festival – priests would march around the altar 7 times chanting Psalm 118:25, they would draw water and pour it upon the altar, praying for God to bless the nation in the coming year Also the same day of the year, 21 st day of the 7 th month, that Haggai prophesied in Haggai 2:1-9 – predicted that the glory of God would return to the temple – a greater glory than the glory of old and that God would bring peace to His people Living water Prayer for the blessing of rain – water poured out on the altar Jesus says He is the living water that people need – as if Jesus was answering the prayer Arresting officers – temple police had been sent to arrest Jesus even before He said these words, scripture records that they returned to the religious leaders empty handed, when asked why they didn’t arrest Jesus they responded, “No one ever spoke like this man.” Reaction of the Crowd Many believed – after the feast had conclu ded Bread of life – give us more food, eat my body and drink my blood, claims power over death “Before Abraham was, I Am” – statement of deity, people want to kill Jesus for blasphemy – greater than Abraham, he was claiming to be God Many turn away – we know what Jesus should do and this isn’t it Death of Lazarus Lazarus, Mary and Martha – from Bethany, near Jerusalem Lazarus becomes sick Send word to Jesus Jesus waits – why? Divine timetable – God’s timing is sometimes hard to understand Thomas – let us go with Him and die with Hi m Martha – if you had been here, questioning, head knowledge I Am the resurrection and the life – the one who gives life, do you believe? I believe you are the Messiah Mary – if you had been here, weeping, heart knowledge, three times Mary is mentioned in scripture, all three times she is found at the feet of Jesus Jesus’ deity and humanity – righteously angered by death (deeply moved and troubled in spirit), saddened by death (wept) Lazarus, come out – had claimed power over death, now demonstrates this power Many hear about this – do they believe? Caiaphas – better for one to die than the whole nation, prophecy inspired by God – we know what Jesus should do
Children Bless the children – holding them and blessing them Disciples rebuke people – stop bothering the master – we know what Jesus should do Jesus rebukes the disciples – let the little children (babies) come Little child to enter the kingdom of heaven Rich young man What must I do to inherit eternal life Keep the commandments I’ve done everything prescribed by the Law of Moses – Jesus loved him (Mark) Give up your money – trust in God alone The young man leaves – doesn’t understand what the infants know How hard it is to enter the kingdom – all based on faith, not works Disciples Peter: We’ve left everything to follow you – still not understanding, not works Blessings, persecutions and eternal life – not works, but faith like an infant Palm Sunday Riding a donkey – king enters in peace Crowds leading to Jerusalem for Passover John – crowds in Jerusalem also come out to see Jesus – had heard about Lazarus Plot to kill both Jesus and Lazarus Psalms Hosanna – Lord save us Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David Hosanna in the highest heaven Fear of the Jewish leaders – what if Jesus declares himself to be Messiah Roman armies already on alert Silence the people – not possible to stop the praise Passion Week Teaching By what authority? Time to choose – who do people say that I am? Plot to kill Jesus Judas’ betrayal – 30 pieces of silver – the price of a slave (Ex 21:32) Prophecy from Zechariah – severance pay of the rejected Shepherd (Zechariah 11:7-13) Jesus had already predicted that he would be betrayed by one of the disciples Applications Most important moment in history Who is Jesus to you? Will you follow Him?
John 20:30-31 (NLT) 30 The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.
