Simon Berasaluce 1914-1993 Simon Berasaluce, born in Deva, was a resident of San Sebastian in the Basque country of Spain. His artistic training was received at the Royal Academies in Madrid and Barcelona. He apprenticed in Madrid before moving to Paris. It was in Paris that Mr. Berasaluce found his place in the art of stained glass. He worked with Maumejean for some years and received awards for his works. Among these was an international competition of design for Sacre Cour Church in Paris. He won the competition but a French studio executed the work. During 1951, Mr. Berasaluce came to the United States and practiced his art at Hiemer & Company in Clifton, NJ. He brought with him the knowledge of the emerging medium of faceted glass and the then innovative European liturgical decorative arts. His wide experience in design, painting, and color ranged from Romanesque to modern experimental. A man of genteel culture, he possessed a high energy level and worked rapidly. Although he preferred contemporary expression, his portraiture was outstanding. During his career, he created works of great beauty for churches throughout this country. His innovative style and mastery of color sets him among the great masters of the stained glass craft. After twenty-two years in the United States, Mr. Berasaluce and his family returned to their beloved Basque Country. In 1980, he was coaxed out of retirement to design a total of 8,731 square feet of stained glass for one hundred twenty windows at St. Cecilia Church in Leominster, MAS. This was the last project he did with Hiemer & Company. Simon Berasaluce will be sorely missed but his beautiful works will stand as testimony to his life for generations. He is survived by his wife Maria and daughter Patricia. 40 GREENE AVE · STAINED GLASS HISTORY SCALE As Noted 26 894 6th Avenue CLIENT EVENHAR 5th Floor PROJECT NUMBER 16.31 NYC 10001 DATE MAY 10, 2017 dxastudio.com T 212 874 0567
