  13. GAS PUMP SKIMMERS

  14. You want to use the innermost pumps at gas stations. Most skimmers are installed on the outer pumps not in view of the clerks inside the station.

  15. To help avoid your account information being stolen, use gas pumps with raised numbers on the key pad and a horizontal slot for your card which indicates that your information is encrypted when entered into the pump. If you do choose to use a pump with a flat keypad and vertical card reader, select “credit” so you are entering your zip code and not your pin number.

  16. E-skimming happens when a hacker inserts malicious credential- stealing software into a retailer’s website. You think you are checking out with your credit card or debit card—because you are, and your items even arrive as intended—but the hacker is stealing your payment information from the shopping cart in real-time. They may even be using your card or selling the information on the Dark Web before you are done with the transaction. Unlike physical card skimming , you cannot simply look at a website and tell that a hacker has tampered with the system with e- skimming. The website owner themselves may not even know unless there is an investigation. However, there are some things you can do to protect yourself.

  17. Enable alerts on your cards “Card Not Present” transaction alerts are a good idea anyway, and they are one of your best defenses against e-skimming.This alert, usually sent by text or email, comes from your card issuer and lets you know anytime your card is used to make a number-only purchase. As soon as the transaction is processed, the alert is issued. Use trusted websites and look for HTTPS Avoid sites you are not familiar with, no matter how great the advertised deals are. Consider a low-limit card for online purchases Especially with holiday shopping coming up, you might consider a low-limit credit card for use on the internet. It can help reduce the amount of damage a hacker can do if your card information is stolen online.

  18. SCAMMERS

  19. IRS / SSA • IRS never makes first contact by phone or email. They send a letter. • They wear uniforms for various businesses – alarm companies, home vehicle recall checks, parking lot mechanics • They can spook their Caller ID to make it look legitimate - credit cards, grandchild arrested, utilities, IRS, and police departments

  20. 2020 CENSUS • In March 2020 the Census Bureau will start mailing out (and, in some areas, hand delivering) invitations to participate in the 2020 Census. You should get yours by April 1. You can respond online, by phone, or by mail. • Starting in May 2020, census takers will start visiting homes that haven’t responded to make sure everyone is counted. If you aren’t home or can’t come to the door, the census taker will come back up to six times. Each time, they’ll leave a door hanger with a phone number so you can call to schedule a visit. • The census questionnaire asks how many people are in the home at the time you complete the form; their sex, age, race, ethnicity; their relationships to one another; phone number; and whether you own or rent the home.

  21. 2020 CENSUS • Scammers may pose as census takers to get your personal information — and then use it to commit identity theft and other frauds. • But there are ways you can identify official census takers. • Census takers must show a photo ID with the U.S. Department of Commerce seal and an expiration date. If you ask, the census taker will give you a supervisor’s contact information and/or the census regional office phone number for verification. Ours is 1-800-852-6159 • The Census Bureau will never ask for your full Social Security number , bank account or credit card numbers , money or donations , or anything on behalf of a political party. The 2020 Census will not ask citizenship status.

  22. SCAMMERS • BE ALERT Do not let your heart over run your Common Sense Basically they will convince you they are your friend or they will scare you into believing them If they are saying that a family member is sick, hurt, or has been arrested. Get their number and actually call that family member or another family member to ask.

  23. SCAMMERS • Be aware of checks made out to over the amount asked • Never pay a bill using a GIFT CARD!

  24. INTERNET • Fake tech support – you are contacted either by phone or computer pop up. • Never give them control of your computer • Microsoft wont call you • Majority begin with warning screens that pop up on your computer or cell phone. Some will have a phone number to call for help, instead just back out of the page or just shutdown your computer and restart it.

  25. INTERNET • Never answer unknown emails or emails from friends that seem unusual

  33. ID THEFT • How do they get the information • Buy it from “Vendors” or “Brokers” • Steal it from mailboxes • Data breaches • Friends or relatives

  36. Information that could have been exposed includes names, addresses, dates of birth and balance information. “AMCA’s affected system also included credit card or bank account information that was provided by the consumer to AMCA (for those who sought to pay their balance),"

  37. “believes this information includes personal information, including certain financial data, Social Security numbers, and medical information, but not laboratory test results.” An outside individual gained unauthorized access and obtained certain types of personal information about Capital One credit card customers and individuals who had applied for our credit card products. The outside individual who took the data was captured by the FBI. The government has stated they believe the data has been recovered and that there is no evidence the data was used for fraud or shared by this individual.
