  2. CURRENT SITUATION

  3. Right Now Nationally 600,000 + skilled jobs going unfilled Minnesota 8,000 + skilled jobs going unfilled 40,000 fewer workers than 1-year ago

  4. Between Now and 2025 The skills gap widens… 2.7 million baby-boomer retirements + 700K new manufacturing jobs due to economic expansion 3.4 million new manufacturing workers needed 1.4 million Supply of new manufacturing workers 2 million Manufacturing jobs unfilled Baby-boomers all hit age 65+ by 2029…

  5. The Cause

  6. Education / Employment Mismatch Most High School grads are choosing the 4-year University... 40% 60% Over 40% of those going to the University don’t finish their degree… University Other Destination of High School Grads

  7. Harvard University Study Educational requirements for jobs in 2018 60% are going to the University, but… B.A. or higher 33% Unskilled 10% Skilled Training 57% In 2018, 57% of all jobs in our economy will require some form of credentialed technical training or an Associate’s Degree. Only 33% of jobs will need a bachelor’s degree or higher.

  8. The Key Fact Educational Requirements for Jobs in the U.S. Economy 4-years or more 2-years or less 33% 67%

  9. The Job Ratio is 1:2:7 In the U.S. economy, for every… Job requiring a Master’s Degree or higher, 1 Jobs require a Bachelor's Degree, and 2 Jobs require a 1-year certificate or 2-year degree. 7

  10. The need…

  11. Hutchinson’s premise  The solution to the skilled workforce shortage is right in front of us.  It’s not “recruit” from outside, but “ reallocate ” existing human resources.

  12. HUTCHINSON’S TIGERPATH INITIATIVE

  13. Build a talent pipeline Talent pipeline (we need to make this bigger) Talent pipeline Strategies: 1. Realign high school education. 2. Build educational pathways. 3. Change stereotypes of manufacturing. 4. Cultivate school-industry relationships. 5. Upgrade high school CTE facilities dramatically. 6. Implement Tiger Manufacturing.

  14. Strategy 1: Realign High School Education  Public  Mechatronics  Business  Science  Non-profit  Manufacturing  For-profit  Health Care  Design  Legal  Private sector  Armed Forces  Construction  People  Agriculture

  15. Help students find the best possible educational & career fit based on their interests & aptitudes . No more “one size fits all” education.

  16. Goals Make learning much more integrated, hands-on & experiential .

  17. Strategy 2: Build Educational Pathways Seamless pathways to earn college credit & industry credentials prior to high school graduation .  College credit in high school.  Welding  Machining  CADD  Mechatronics  Building Trades  Industry recognized certifications earned in high school.

  18. Strategy 3: Change Stereotypes Show what manufacturing looks like in the 21 st century.  Industry tours for students and parents.  Job fairs of local manufactures at HHS. (help students learn about all the really cool things going on at our local companies)  Bring 21 st century high-tech precision manufacturing right into the high school.  Increase female participation.

  19. Strategy 4: Cultivate School-Industry Relationships “Bring school into industry and industry into school.”  “Adopt a School” program for local manufacturers & employers Required starting 2019-2020 school year  Senior year internship with employers.  Welding camp for middle schoolers.

  20. Strategy 5: Upgrade CTE facilities dramatically Upgrading High School Career & Technical Education facilities and equipment will… Change the stereotype students and parents have of manufacturing. Get students inspired and excited about Career & Technical education and employment. Provide world-class equipment for students to train on.

  21. This is what we had…  Reinforces the old stereotype of manufacturing.  Discourages exploration of technical education.  “Turns off” students and parents.

  22. Today… Hutchinson has the best equipped, most advanced technical education program in the State of Minnesota.

  23. State-of-the-art equipment CNC Tool-Room Lathe CNC Vertical Machining Center (2)

  24. Strategy 6: Tiger Manufacturing An authentic manufacturing business based in the high school – making real products for real customers. Woods & Engines & Metals & Screen Printing Building Trades Automotive Machining Specialty jobs Welding Job Logo Design Tiny Houses for area Shop manufacturers 2-wheel Apparel Cabinets TBD trailers Posters? Yard Sheds TBD Furniture TBD Repair Custom Furniture TBD

  25. Tiger Manufacturing This student-run company will…  Add relevance to coursework.  Provide a realistic work experience.  Build teamwork & soft skills.  Foster critical thinking & problem-solving skills.  Teach entrepreneurship & business operations.  Generate capital to keep machinery up to date.

  26. PROGRESS REPORT

  27. TigerPath Academies implemented Emphasizing… What do I like? Interests & aptitudes What am I good at? Integrated, hands-on, experiential learning Not just “degrees,” but also skills acquisition.

  28. Impact class enrollment Enrollment in first-year “pathway” classes is up dramatically.

  29. Educational pathways established Seamless pathways to earn college credit & industry credentials prior to high school graduation .  College credit in high school.  Welding (DONE)  Machining (DONE)  CADD (DONE)  Mechatronics (to be done)  Building Trades (DONE)  Industry recognized certifications earned in high school.

  33. Modernized 21 st Century High School

  34. Next Steps 1. www.HutchTigerPath.com 2. Tiger Manufacturing (2018-2019) 3. TigerPath Coordinator 4. Internships become universal (2019-2020) 5. Industry 4.0

  35. Industry 4.0 Describes the networking & digitalization of industrial production. Modern internet-based communication technologies are merged with classic industrial processes to form so-called “cyber-physical” systems. Internet of Things Near Field Communication Mobile Robotics Plug & Produce Manufacturing Execution System (MES) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)
