  1. SA Forum

  2. Priorities for our school? • All young people are safe. • All young people are happy. • All young people maximise their potential.

  3. Timetable - relationships • “The time table shouldn’t run the school” Neither should the staff, the parents or the department! All schools are different and structures in schools should cater for students needs. The timetable should be designed to maximise flexibility and resources. Staff (part timers), spaces (speciality) and programs (curriculum).

  4. Keep It Simple Stupid • All lessons same length • All days the same length • All sessions the same time each day • Any weekly subject allocations need to be significant. (at least 3 sessions per week) • Try not to alter the timetable structure during the year. • Cover the curriculum commitments over two years if required. Eg 7 & 8

  5. Allotments • Getting teaching staff to have full allotments should be part of your game plan. • 20 hours face to face = 1200 minutes • 24 x 50min = 1200 minutes • 20 x 60 min = 1200 minutes • 16 x 75 min = 1200 minutes • Other possibilities should total 1200 mins otherwise it is a cost • In SA it should be 1260 minutes (21 hours)

  6. My Optimum SA Timetable • No home group/pastoral care • 6 x 52.5 minute classes per day • 1600 minutes tuition per week (30 x 52.5) • Teacher allotments 1260 minutes = 24 x 52.5 exactly • Beginning 21.6 x 52.5 = 1260 ( round to 21 ) • ATSI Beginning 19.2 x 52.5 = 1260 (round to 19) • (perhaps use the 2.5 minutes for changeover each lesson!!)

  7. Economics 101 • Mean teacher salary plus on costs nearly $100, 000 • Say each lesson is 52.5 minutes (6 x 52.5 = 1600 minutes per day) • 24 x 52.5 = 1260 min = 21 hours face to face • 100,000 / 24 = about $4200 per lesson Or • 4200 /52.5 = $80 a minute per staff member per year, tuition time

  8. Under allotment/time release • A given is all lessons cost on average $4200 per annum, say! • Every under allotted lesson is costs $4200 this is why Principals need to to have tight control of allotment allocations and insist this is kept to an absolute minimum. We went from 53 ($223,000) to 5 the next year ($21,000) • Every time release lesson costs $4200!! Do the sums. Maybe it is better to give people a special payment rather than a time reduction, especially tasks that don’t have to be done at school. Eg subject coordination!

  9. Class Sizes • 29 max Case 1 (maximum) Say enrolment year 8 is 203 equals 7 X 29 The cost is 210 lessons x $4200 per year = $882,000 Income is say 203 x $8000 = $1,624,000 Case 2 (minimum) 175 students in year 8 is 7 x 25 cost as above $882,000 Income is 175 x $8000 = $1,400,000 ie. $224,000 less for same program

  10. Some Case Studies

  11. Align English Block 1 English A English B English C English D etc

  12. Student Support 7 -9 • Removal from LOTE for 3 years • About 5% of year group • No alignment in timetable • One fulltime support teacher (at a cost) • Class sizes vary from 1 to 15 • Teacher offers catch up/literacy/homework support

  13. Warrnambool S. C. Sports Academies • The school offers 8 different sports for the students to voluntary enrol in. • They do skills training before and after school. During PE and IT (4 x 75 min sessions blocked) they do their strength and conditioning which are streamed classes from the block. All sports mixed in the class with individual programs for each student.

  14. Sporting Pathway Program ..Warrnambool • Basketball 26 • Cricket 7 • Football 31 • Hockey 7 • Tennis 6 • Open water swimming 0 • Netball 16 • Soccer 0

  15. Albert Park SC…..The Da Vinci Project • In Year 9, students undertake the Da Vinci Project which develops knowledge of the arts, humanities and sciences through the study of environmental issues • Students are asked to produce works of art that reflect their individual topic of investigation, and use this to promote discussion about the environment. • As part of the project, students are required to undertake an expedition, which can range from the exploration of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland to World Challenge adventures in Borneo, Malaysia and Thailand. • The program culminates in an exhibition at the end of the semester, where students present their work to the community.

  16. • Class sizes of 50 with two teachers in purpose built spaces • Specialise in environment and the arts for all students • 25 x 1 hour lessons enviro 5, english 4, maths 4, hum 2, science 2, PE 2, electives 6 (single class lessons) • Powerful “apple” school with all curriculum and references online. • Y9 campus is separate to main campus

  17. University High (Galileo Y9 program) • 2 Classes, 50 students, 10 weeks (1 term) full time • 8 year 9 classes, 2 classes each term, timetable not interrupted. • 3 teachers take 24 lessons each with groups of 17 students. • Students stay in art/tech electives (6 lessons per week) • Teachers stay in the program for 3 years. ( 1 leaves each year) • Don’t do this one day a week, don’t necessarily build a new space, don’t be bluffed by maths and LOTE teachers, • Have passionate teachers, have a dynamic curriculum, be rich in IT, create good and difficult teams with the student group.

  18. University High (Elizabeth Blackburn School of Sciences) • 100 selected students in academic classes , lecture style, along the university model. • Each class counts as 4 in teachers allotment. Ie they teach EBSS chemistry 5 x 4 =20 and 8a junior science (3) allotment 23 with 8 face to face visits and 22 preparation and correction lessons per week. • Practical classes of 50 with teacher and lab assistant as supervisors • Use “one note” for assignments which are marked online and returned online • Use group blogs for tutorials with students and teacher.

  19. Northcote High School (meeting schedule) • In Victoria we can have 2 X 1 hour of meetings each week maximum. • Northcote has PLT,s of 3 or 4. Each is responsible for one subject at one level. Eg year 8 english. • Week 1 whole school PD 1 hour, committee reporting ½ hour, • Week 2 whole school PD 1 hour, PLT meeting 1½ hours. • PLT does all curriculum, assessment etc for their designated subject. • High accountability, small efficient team, greater communication • Excellent IT storage and search facilities using whole school templates.

  20. Recommendations • Take the risk • Bring a small team with you • Build in sustainability ( $$, staff, resources and facilities ) • Plan well with good communication to students, staff and parents • If you have to ….. ignorne statewide curriculum documents!!! • Collect data during your journey • Celebrate your successes • Be willing to review and improve the program
