  19. UNCLASSIFIED Thermal Energy Storage Project at Sierra Army Depot Overview • Primary objective: Further Army Net Zero Energy goals and improve habitability by installing BioPCM Mats in Building 303 at SIAD and enable AMC to evaluate full-scale performance in an operational environment • Insulation will be installed in the roof of Building 303 • Then BioPCM will be installed over the existing exposed insulation in the walls above the 8' elevation and over the newly installed insulation in the roof UNCLASSIFIED 19

  20. UNCLASSIFIED Overview of Facilities at Sierra Army Depot Buildings 302 (Control) and 303 • Wood frame construction built during World War II (typical of AMC facilities) • Relatively few upgrades since • There are some obstacles along the roof and walls, but none that seriously impede installation UNCLASSIFIED 20

  21. UNCLASSIFIED Installation of Material at Sierra Army Depot • Owens Corning FSK-25 insulation - Meets fire requirements if left exposed - Provides vapor barrier • BioPCM Mats - Meets fire requirements if left exposed - Provides vapor barrier UNCLASSIFIED 21

  22. UNCLASSIFIED Project Design at Sierra Army Depot • Performance was predicted using MIL-STD-810G daytime temperature profile • The warehouse is: - Heated in the winter with natural gas - Not actively cooled in the summer - Fans are used for ventilation • Analysis was used to determine the thermal mass of PCM needed for the application UNCLASSIFIED 22

  23. UNCLASSIFIED Measurement and Verification ! US Army AMRDEC Energy lab • Provided temperature loggers for both buildings • Provide Resourse Efficiency Manager (Steve Chaffin) to assist with logger installation and data assessment ! AMRDEC assessing this technology for Redstone Installation Energy and Operational Energy Projects UNCLASSIFIED 23

  24. UNCLASSIFIED PCM Installation Diagram • BioPCM Mats are installed between the insulation and interior of the building • 9/16” staples will be used with a 12” to 15” spacing - Tear load factor of safety is 6.75 under normal conditions UNCLASSIFIED 24
