What Do SAIL Students Do? ❖ Affective Needs lessons for Identified students (3 times per year) ❖ 3 Units of study -Inventions- flexible thinking, problem solving, creativity -Research -personal passion projects -Hands-On Equations - (Algebraic thinking and solving) ❖ COMET enrichment classes- 2 weeks a year at Science Museum SAIL / YS 2015-2016

  5. What about grades 1 and 2? Grades 1 and 2 receive enrichment. We meet with 1 or 2 groups for 4 sessions to meet the needs of kids who are advanced in an area. Teachers choose who gets pulled in for enrichment based on classroom work. Enrichment units include: ❖ Creativity Unit ❖ Multicultural Book Study ❖ Math Extension Unit SAIL / YS 2015-2016

  6. Can You get into SAIL after 2nd Grade? YES! We are constantly reviewing data and re-testing students. SAIL teachers go over all new student files. New students (grades 3-5) are given the NNAT as a screening test. Teacher input is valuable, and can be used to decide if a student could be pulled in for a unit, or is a candidate for further testing! SAIL / YS 2015-2016

  13. *This school year we have 60 Identified Young Scholars in grades 1-5 *Kindergargten classes begin in December. Each classroom receives four lessons in their rooms. One lesson for each of the types of thinking skills. *This year we are piloting a program to work with a small group of kindergarten students that show success with specific kinds of thinking skills. Each small group receives 3 lessons, specific to that type of thinking. I have worked with 30 kindergarten students in small groups this school year. SAIL / YS 2015-2016

  17. Summer Camp *June 20 - 24th, 2016 *9:00 - 3:00 Skyview Elementary School *Free, Week long day camp *Transportation Theme this summer *Free Field Trips *All Breakfast, lunches, and snacks provided *Water Bottle and T-Shirt for all Young Scholars who participate in camp SAIL / YS 2015-2016

  18. Strategy Lab Games *Grades 1-5 learn 4 different games per year. *Along with the games students are taught Universal Strategies to apply during game play, school lessons, sports, and life in general. *This school year we all worked on having a Growth Mindset . SAIL / YS 2015-2016

  21. 622 Beginnings: ● 622 began Young Scholars in 2009, serving 108 students 1-3 in 3 schools ● Now we service 9 elementary schools and over 900 kids per year grades K-5 ● Three middle schools serving 108 students in grade 6 SAIL / YS 2014-2015

  22. 832 Beginnings ● 832 began Growing Scholars in 2011 with the collaborative efforts of 622 ● We started with 2 critical-thinking assessment lessons in the first grade classrooms ● 20 students attending 2 ½ day, week-long summer camps in Mahtomedi SAIL / YS 2015-2016
