  1. PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT The City of Rossland Public Works staff consists of 15 full time employees, 3 summer students and 1 seasonal winter employee. Areas included under Public Works are parks, arena, water treatment, water distribution, sewer collection, and roads.

ROADS 2010 WINTER ROADS  All snow clearing is done as per our snow clearing policy  Plowing and sanding of streets  Downtown Snow clearing  Cal de sac’s  Parking lots  Winter sand preparation and storage is done  Alley’s and lanes in early November and takes two weeks  Snow blowing and hauling of excessive accumulations of 10 to 15 cm in the downtown core  Clearing and hauling of snow obstructing intersection visibility and snow piled over storm drains , this takes three weeks  We also haul snow from areas with pour drainage to prevent spring flooding in residential areas this takes two weeks to complete.

ROADS 2010 STREET SWEEPING  Street sweeping to pick up winter CATCH BASIN & STORM sand takes 6 weeks to complete WATER  Street sweeping is ongoing one day per week from April to October With over 300 storm drains in our system  Fall sweeping to pick up leaves takes  Clean and inspect storm drains and catch 4 weeks basins yearly.  Keep the drains clear of leafs and debris April to November  Remove ice and snow to prevent winter run off flooding, this takes place in February and March Shop maintenance work equals 2.13 FTE

ROADS 2010 ROAD REPAIRS  Pothole patching takes place in all seasons with most repairs done in May and June  Road shouldering is done to fill holes and develop drainage for rain run off most of this work takes place in July and August  Ditch cleaning and Culvert repairs takes place in May  Sickle mowing is done two times per season this happens in late May and at end of July Spokane Street Culvert

ROADS 2010 ROAD REPAIRS  Dust control on the gravel roads and lanes takes place in late June early July  Alley and lane grading is done in advance of the dust control  Pruning in alley ways to keep the alleys accessible and clear of tree branches and shrubs for vehicles and our equipment, the work takes place in August and September  Pruning at intersections is done for visibility and safety reasons with the work taking place in June  Crosswalks , parking and line painting is done in late May and June Contractor used for dust retardant

  6. ROADS 2010 TRAFFIC SIGANGE With some 300 traffic signs on our City streets the crews keep busy with……  New installations including sign bases this work takes place in September or October (2weeks)  Repairs and replacements of older signs takes place in May ( 1 week)  Brushing of trees and bushes that are blocking signage are done throughout the year  Day to day upkeep due to vandalism takes place all year around . (2 weeks) Road work equals 5.48 FTE

SIDEWALKS 2010 SIDEWALKS & STAIRS With over 5 Kilometers of sidewalks in our community the crews do most sidewalk repairs in June through to August.  2 ‐ 3 New installations mainly at Red Mountain that will be added to our list  Repair s of trip hazards and sidewalk panels lifted by trees in June to August  Accessibility repairs and new installations (wheel chair access)  Repairs to hand rails and stairs in July for two weeks  Snow removal and sanding through out the winter months  Hand shoveling snow from the stairs and sidewalks of public buildings

RETAINING WALLS There are numerous retaining Retaining wall on McLeod Ave walls in Rossland that are in great need of repair.  Some walls are cement that are leaning towards the roads or toward residential houses  Old walls that are made from dry stacking rocks are starting to crumble and will Before need to be rebuilt by hand  Other walls that cannot be hand built will be completely taken down and rebuilt with cement blocks or large rocks using machinery After

  9. NEW DEVELOPMENT New roads and sidewalks are being developed in new areas around Rossland that will be more paving/patching and snowplowing for the City to maintain.

COMPLETED PROJECTS  Patching of Washington Street potholes Shop Fuel Tank  Curb repair at United Church Replacement  Retaining wall repairs throughout the City have been completed on Dunn Crescent and McLeod Avenue  Spokane Street culvert between Thompson Avenue and Victoria Avenue  Highway 22 and Columbia Avenue projects Before  New fuel tanks at works yard Before Retaining wall on Dunn Crescent After After

PARKS 2010 PARKS 2010 PLAYING FIELDS & WASHROOMS INSPECTION AND REPAIR OF 2 BALL PARKS  Infield skins groomed twice a week from May to the end of August  Mowing of the lawns weekly  Fence repairs take two weeks per season (vandalism is not included)  Irrigation system start up, head replacement, blow at the end of the season equals two weeks  Washroom facilities cleaned or checked work 3 times a week  Garbage and litter picked up three times per week  Any required tree pruning within the park Parks & Facilities work equals 3.28 FTE

PARKS 2010 PARKS 2010 OPEN SPACES MAINTENACE OF 9 PUBLIC PARKS  Mowing of the lawns and weed eating on a weekly basis  Tree pruning and low limbing 1 day every second week  Planting of the flowerbeds, summer dead heading ,weeding and fall removal 1 day per week  Garbage and litter control 3 time per week  Repairs to structural items – light standards, garbage receptacles , benches , and picnic tables – 1 day every 2 weeks  Inspect and repairs playgrounds in city park in May , July and September ‐ 2 days per month

PARKS 2010 PARKS 2010 BOULEVARDS & PLANTERS  Mowing weekly and weed eating twice LANDSCAPING a month  Flower planters and hanging baskets  Spring preparation and planting equals 8 watered 3 ‐ 6 times a week weeks of work  Garbage and litter control once per day  Summer weeding and dead heading during summer months requires 3 days per week  Weed control on the residential  Fall cleanup and turning of the beds takes 4 boulevards around fire hydrants and weeks to complete and is done in October public facilities weekly

PARKS 2010 PARKS 2010 TREES  The City of Rossland has over 2000 trees in our parks and on our road allowances.  The trees are inspected and pruned in May and June  Low limbing is done during June and July  Trees are removed if deemed to a danger to the public safety  For each tree removed another one is planted with in the City Garbage  The City of Rossland has 4 locations at Trail heads for bio degradable dog pick up bags  Bear proof bins around the parks for garbage disposal

PARKS 2010 PARKS 2010 IRRIGATION  We have 13 independent irrigation system within the city parks and 6 in city buildings  Each year we are upgrading the systems by installing water metering and backflow prevention equipment  Repairs, sprinkler head replacements, valves , metering and radio control to the central control at the works yard are key upgrades to the systems  This work continues from May when the systems are turned on until they are blown Community Garden Irrigation out in October

FACILITIES 2010 CITY OWNED BUILDINGS The City also has other structures within our municipality : washrooms, lift stations, pump houses, storage structures, memorial benches, dugouts ……….  Interior painting, remodeling , roofing  Exterior repairs to window , doors , railings and stairs  Inspections of each building to ensure compliance with MIA standards  Signage  Plumbing repairs  Electrical repairs  All vandalism repairs

  19. SWIMMING POOL 2010  Our outdoor swimming pool was built by volunteers in 1932 and is still operating as a non profit society.  The City maintains the facility and programs are run by our recreation department.

  20. ARENA 2010  Our arena was built in 1947 and a new brightening ceiling installed in 1995. It is used from Oct 1 ‐ Mar15 for ice sports and used seasonally for roller derby and other inside sports.  Compressors overhauled every spring, boards washed annually  Change rooms, hallways and washrooms are painted annually  Upgrades to the roof are completed, exterior newly painted, new signage in and around the arena, the concession updated and the hot water system upgraded

VANDALISM 2010  Trees in the downtown core and parks get damaged and/or cut down and need to be replaced (bear damage as well)  Fencing material in parks gets taken down and hauled away or burned in fire pits in the parking lot  Benches and picnic tables get cut and scratched with profanity and need to be sanded and stained or replaced

  22. PARK  Picnic table was purchased IMPROVEMENTS and installed at Harry LeFevre Square  Garbage bins in the downtown core were altered to keep bears away  Lights on the Father Pat memorial are being custom made and installed  Vandalized signs are being replaced
