  3. 2016 meeting outcomes (actions) DONE - GOV Vision survey results were circulated to GOVST & patrons - Champion email addresses were added to the respective TT mailing lists - GOVST-VIII agenda organisation was supported by a GOVST sub-group Ongoing - GOVST to identify and formulate the big overarching vision , questions and priorities for GOV (this meeting and future documentation) - GOV groups to better share knowledge about outcome/products of GOV through national report additions (name of service contact, list of publicly available products, links to product websites) - TT co-chairs to provide slides for ongoing update of GOV generic presentation In preparation - GOV to support the completion and publication of the “ Guide for Operational Oceanography” of ET -OOFS - PO to send TT update quad-charts to national group reps for information & feedback GOVST-VIII meeting, Hotel Augustin, Bergen, 6-10 November 2017

GOV membership Several GOVST membership changes since last year: o New GOVST co-chairs confirmed (May 2017) • Eric Chassignet (FSU/ COAPS) • PN Vinayachandran (Indian Institute of Sciences) o New OSEval-TT co-chairs (July 2017) • Elisabeth Remy (Mercator Ocean) and Yosuke Fujii (MRI-JMA) o New system representatives • Giovanni Coppini, CMCC representing the MFS • Yosuke Fujii, MRI-JMA representing the Japan Forecasting System (MOVE.COM/MRI) • Kristian Mogensen, ECMWF representing ECMWF Changes to the GOV Patrons’ Group membership: o Mikhail Entel (BoM) took over from Rick Bailey (BoM) o Francois Montagner (EUMETSAT) took over from Hans Bonekamp (EUMETSAT) o Melinda Lontoc- Roy (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) has joined the Patrons’ Group from Canada o Philippe Escudier (CNES) has stepped down, a new members has not yet been confirmed GOVST-VIII meeting, Hotel Augustin, Bergen, 6-10 November 2017

COSS-TT/ ARCOM meeting, Cape Town, April 2017 Co-organised with CSIR, SAEON and the University of Cape Town, SA Topic: International Coordination Meeting of the Costal and Shelf Seas TT in collaboration with ARCOM (Group for Altimetry for Regional & Coastal Ocean Models) Duration: 5-days Main hosts/organisers: Pierre De Mey (LEGOS), Villy Kourafalou (University of Miami), Björn Backeberg (CSIR), Charine Collins (SAEON), Sharon Bosma (University of Cape Town), Shari Mento (SAEON), Kirsten Wilmer-Becker (Met Office) Scope: The scope of this workshop was to bring together members from the regional & coastal modelling communities addressing a number of topics: science in support to coastal ocean forecasting, coastal model assessments, altimetry for regional & coastal models and operational and pre-operational coastal forecasting systems. Participation: 49 attendees Representation: 14 countries Abstract submissions: 47 abstracts submitted Outcomes: A number of small action groups to explore (1) collaborations with other disciplines (e.g. hydrology), (2) possible exchanges with other research groups (e.g. WCRP grand challenges), (3) organisation of activities (e.g. model assessment metrics), (4) contribution to common publications (e.g. on model intercomparison with focuses on dedicated processes in different regions), and (5) to strengthening of links to ARCOM (e.g. more exchange between members and representation of ARCOM on GOV website) and GOV (in particular national group representative) GOVST-VIII meeting, Hotel Augustin, Bergen, 6-10 November 2017

GOV International School, Mallorca, 2-13 Oct 2017 The school was sponsored by national and international organisations Topic: A two week programme organised for early career scientists, professionals and students covering the current state of the art in operational oceanography and related advances in the ocean sciences. Duration: 2 weeks Main hosts/organisers: Ananda Pascual (IMEDEA CSIC-UIB), Jacques Verron (IGE), Eric Chassignet (FSU/COAPS), Joaquin Tintoré (SOCIB & IMEDEA), Kirsten Wilmer-Becker (Met Office) and many others!! Joint DA-TT/OSEval-TT meeting, La Spezia, Oct 2017 Co-organised with CMRE and ONRG (sponsor) Topic: Recent developments in regional and global ocean DA systems, new DA methods and recent studies of observation impacts. The meeting also allowed for separate DA-TT and OSEval-TT meetings. GOVPO financial situation  Two years ago - PO funds were very low, future of PO was uncertain, sponsors had reduced their support or stopped altogether Annual contribution from GOV sponsors  Now since 2009 (UK FY) £100,000.00 - Funds are at a good level, future of £90,000.00 £80,000.00 PO more stable, sponsors have £70,000.00 committed to renewed and/or £60,000.00 £50,000.00 increased funding £40,000.00 £30,000.00 £20,000.00 £10,000.00  Future £0.00 09/10 10/11 11/12 12/13 13/14 14/15 15/16 16/17 17/18 - Need to continue to monitor sponsor contributions and flag up problems early. - Protect PO funding and seek additional support if TT activities or GOV events (e.g. symposium) need funds - Consider investing in improving GOV facilities, e.g. website GOVST-VIII meeting, Hotel Augustin, Bergen, 6-10 November 2017
