Pitkin’s current playscape is 18 years old and students with limited mobility are unable to access the playground. The size of the existing playground also limits the amount of children that can play on it during recess.
PROJECT TIMELINE 2017 201 7 Octobe October- Parents held initial meeting with principal November- Committee of parents & teachers formed (Pitkin Playground Committee). Input from educators, occupational therapists, Novembe physical therapists, parents, kids, and local social media blogs on which playground components to include Decembe December- Met with vendors to get designs & quotes 201 2018 8 J anu anuar ary- Fundraisers & Donations- basketball game, vendor fair, dress down week, etc. November- $16,000 to install a three bay swing set Novembe December December - Pitkin Playground Project was added to EHPS Capital Improvement Plan 2019 2019 January - Board of Education Approved the Capital Improvement Plan (contingent upon funding) April- Formed non-profit (Pitkin Playground Inc.) July - Anonymous donation worth $381,753 October- Awarded a $75,000 grant from Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. Pitkin Playground 2020 *The new playground would be open all year long and accessible to the entire community. * During school hours the playground will only be accessible to the children at Pitkin.
2020 Plan • 720 ft. of fencing around entire play area with 8 ft. high fencing by wooded area. • 12 ft. wide double gate for plowing access to asphalt • Three 4ft. wide gates for entrance • Existing playground will be replaced by Gazebo in three to five years • Asphalt walkway and pa v ers will be put in by parking lot entrance to new playground • Curb cut and extended walkway added to existing walkway
