  1. PABC AGM Presentation – Librarian Demo of the Services Outreach Librarian Presentation – Eugene Barsky April 29, 2006 1

  2. About Me: • Master of Library and Information Science – UBC • BA in Psychology • Work experience in both public (UBC; St. Paul’s Hospital) and private (QLT Inc.) sectors 2

  3. Overall Project Goal: • Support the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (UBC) and Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia (PABC) strategic plans by providing instruction, research and information services to PABC member physiotherapists 3

  4. Objectives: • Provide online and in-person information services to PABC physiotherapists • Design and deliver information instruction programs using various methods and technologies • Participate in the planning and implementation of policies, guidelines, procedures and anticipating the information needs of PABC members 4

  5. Flowcharting the “How to” Survey Interviews Needs Assessment Services Design and Delivery Evaluation and Feedback 5

  6. Understanding the needs • Survey - online version was hosted online (Survey Monkey) during March 2006 − Easy-to-use and friendly-to-eye − Helped analyzing data 6

  7. Survey Results • 111 people have responded • Results are available here - http://tinyurl.com/qvmg5 • Demographic proportions were very similar to PABC membership population [e.g. 70% of the survey participants are private practice practitioners, 47% of the participants live in the Greater Vancouver area, followed by Vancouver Island (17%), Okanagan (17%) and Fraser Valley (10%), etc.] 7

  8. Survey Results • Some of the interesting results from the survey included: − Only 3% of the survey participants always find relevant professional information that they are looking for – there is a definite space for improvement :) − 35% of survey participants are not satisfied with their information capabilities − When talking about challenges while looking for professional information, most participants mentioned time and money issues − Moreover, many noted that filtering for high-quality information might be time consuming and sometimes confusing − Keeping up with the professional developments in the field is also challenging. − So, these are my professional goals – saving you time and money when working with professional physiotherapy information 8

  9. How to do that? − Workshops (face-to-face, online tutorials, and PDFs posted online) − Specialized search engine − Weblog − Personal information sessions − Research services − Your suggestions? 9

  10. Research Skills Learning - Workshops • Workshops : 1. Using FREE general search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN) to locate reliable and high-quality health / medical information 2. Using FREE specialized medical databases (PubMed, PEDro) to find Evidence Based Practice research 3. Utilizing various alerts and current awareness tools to stay up-to-date with professional information 10

  11. Research Skills Learning - Workshops Mastering General Search Engines - Using FREE general 1. search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN) to locate reliable health / medical information − Primarily for private practice − Search for free reliable info (including grey lit) − Use the power of command language and “Advanced Search” − Good for day-to-day activities − This workshop is ready and is first to be delivered next week during the librarian Okanagan tour − Online tutorial to be created during summer 2006 11

  12. Research Skills Learning - Workshops 2. Mastering PubMed for Physios - Using FREE specialized medical database (PubMed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine) to find Evidence Based Practice research − Incredibly rich and free resource for research − Highest quality and level of evidence research − Using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) − Use advanced search features and database limits − This workshop is ready and is first to be delivered next week during the librarian Okanagan tour − Online tutorial to be created during summer 2006 12

  13. Research Skills Learning - Workshops 3. Staying up-to-date with physio info using alerts and current awareness services − Understand what are the options for professional information alerts and current awareness services and how these work − Review three example of these services , each using a different conceptual approach − This workshop is almost ready and is first to be delivered next week during the librarian Okanagan tour − Online tutorial to be created during summer 2006 13

  14. Workshops – where and when? • Following the results of our survey, the Lower Mainland workshops would be taught in small groups (7-9 people) in computer labs of UBC , Vancouver General Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital during weekday evenings or weekends • Location and time would be suited to your needs and registration would be required (please do attend if you register!) • For other locations, the workshops would be delivered as a three-hours seminar during the librarian tour to the region (Kelowna – May 5 th , Prince George – June 3 rd , etc.) • For more information on these workshops, check out our blog - http://weblogs.elearning.ubc.ca/physio/ 14

  15. Information Services • Reference Services − Help PABC members to locate relevant professional information − Some of the question already asked included: • What is the evidence comparing the efficacy of hard and soft hip protectors in senior populations? • What are the current ethics issues involved in physiotherapy practice? • What are workloads, staffing and patient ratios levels among physiotherapists in public practice? 15

  16. Information Services • Reference Services − Assist PABC committees, task forces and individual members conducting research activities (so far I worked with Business Affairs Committee, Public Practice Committee, and Pain research group) 16

  17. Information Services - Weblog • Weblog - UBC Physio Info-Blog - http://weblogs.elearning.ubc.ca/physio/ − Discuss physiotherapy informatics with an emphasis on Evidence-Based Practice − Present new physiotherapy information (focus on BC and Canada) − Encourage comments and information sharing among physiotherapists − Encourage international collaboration 17

  18. Information Services - Weblog • Weblog - UBC Physio Info-Blog - http://weblogs.elearning.ubc.ca/physio/ − Online since April 11, 2006 − Viewed 600 times in two weeks period! − Visits from Canada (BC, AB, MN, ON, QC, NS, NFLD, PEI), US and Australia so far :) − Your feedback / information of interest is VERY WELCOME! 18

  19. Information Services - PhysioEngine • Physiotherapy Search Engine - PhysioEngine − Searches ONLY for reliable PT content − Flexible to implement PABC physiotherapists’ information needs − Transferable to individual physiotherapists’ websites (contact me for the coding!) 19

  20. Information Services - PhysioEngine − Also available on our blog - http://weblogs.elearning.ubc.ca/physio/ or here - http://rollyo.com/tuta1/physioengine/ − To learn more about the search engine (and to try it out), see my blog post about it - http://tinyurl.com/rldeh 20

  21. Information Services - Podcasts and Webcasts • Podcasts are digital recording, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player • We will focus on physio and other health informatics, for instance what is a specialized search engine and how to use it in Evidence Based Practice • Will be introduced in mid-summer 2006 • You would be able to subscribe / download (free) podcasts and listen to these using your iPod or any mp3 player (or any computer at your convenience!) 21

  22. Working with PABC • Hours at the PABC office – Fridays (maybe more) • Series of Town Hall meetings • Series of workshops across the province • Will be willing to meet with physiotherapists in their offices (if effective and appropriate) • Always available by email / phone / fax / blog / e- chat / instant messaging 22

  23. Special Issues • UBC Library resources − Unfortunately, UBC doesn’t provide access to FOR- FEE collections and databases (EMBASE, CINAHL, etc.) − Outreach librarian will work with members to find and filter relevant information, however, full text would need to be purchased (using a CPA agreement with CISTI) or accessed via members institutional affiliation or via a local public library − Please contact me for any specific question :) 23

  24. Province Information Initiatives • The BC Electronic Library Network - http://www.eln.bc.ca/index.php. provides equitable, and cost-effective access to information for learners and educators throughout British Columbia. • The Electronic Health Library of BC – eHLBC - http://www.bcahc.ca/BCAHC_page.asp?pageID=700. This site will provide a single access point to a comprehensive set of high quality electronic resources for health professionals. Effective – April 2006 24
