24/09/2013 Outline • What is PREP? – Student/Participant perspective An Introduction to the Psychology – Researcher perspective Research Experience Pool (PREP) • What is Sona? • How do researchers get access to PREP? September 24, 2013 http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ What is PREP? Students as Participants • Learn about research methods • The Psychology Research Experience Pool – Doing something makes it more memorable than (PREP) is a system to organize student just reading about it! participation in psychology experiments in • Learn about research ethics exchange for course credit (bonus marks) – Rights and responsibilities as a research • Similar systems (“subject pools”) are in place participant at most universities in Canada and the US • Learn more about the research topics in the • Participating in research is a valuable department educational experience – Future honours students http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ Students as Participants Students as Participants • Potential coercion • Research Observation vs. Research Participation – Course credit for participation is bonus, not required – Participation = the usual – Alternative written assignment option – Observation = participant gets the same – Research Observation option experience, but without providing data (any data automatically recorded as part of the procedure • Anonymity should be deleted/destroyed without – Course instructor should not know which studies examination) their students participated in, nor whether credits • Participants have the option to be an Observer without were earned from participation, observation, or any penalty or loss of experience, and can change from the alternative written assignment Participant to Observer at any time http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ 1
24/09/2013 Students as Participants Researchers using PREP • Educational Experience • Can conduct studies that would otherwise not be feasible for financial reasons (participant – Knowledgeable experimenters testing participants payments) – Detailed debriefing/feedback form – More honours students may be able to collect their • Purpose of study and hypotheses own data • Brief description of task/procedure • Some additional paperwork and responsibilities • Expected results – Informed Consent Form for PREP • Related reference(s) • Contact information for PI, Researcher(s), ICEHR – Debriefing Form – Knowledgeable experimenters http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ Researchers using PREP What is Sona? • ICEHR approval first • Sona is the online experiment management • No exclusionary studies system software used for administration of – May not exclude minorities (e.g., ESL) from study PREP participation • Include a brief demographics questionnaire and exclude data – Posts available studies for participants to view from analysis if necessary – Posts available timeslots for participants to sign up • No online studies for: no need to call or email for recruitment! – Experimenter must be present to respond to questions or problems prior to consent, during – Different account types have access to different participation, and after participation information in the system – Can collect data online from participants in computer lab on campus with researcher present http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ What is Sona? What is Sona? • Researchers post (ICEHR approved) descriptions • Participant shows up for their timeslot of their study; studies must be approved by – Researcher should be present early! admin prior to being visible to students – Researcher updates the timeslot to “Participated”, – Also post “timeslots”. Timeslots are available appointments for study participation, and include the or “No - Show” (either excused, if participant date/time and location of the study contacted researcher in advance of timeslot, or • Participants view available timeslots in approved unexcused if they just don’t show up) studies, and can choose to sign up • System automatically keeps track of credit – Researcher is notified via email that someone has signed up for their timeslot points based on updating of timeslots – Student is reminded of timeslot via email the day before http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ 2
24/09/2013 What is Sona? How do I access PREP? • Account Types 1. Read the PREP Researcher and PI – Primary Investigator: receives hours; can create documentation studies (at least one researcher required) and post 2. Request an account for Sona timeslots; 3. Obtain ICEHR approval to test PREP – Researcher: can create studies and post timeslots; participants associated PI needed for hours – Instructor: can view credit points earned by students 4. Submit New Study Request to PREP in course committee – Participant: can view available studies and timeslots, 5. Prior to the start of each semester, each PI can sign up to participate and view earned credits must request hours for all researchers – (Administrator: approves studies, etc.) http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ What type of account do I need? ICEHR Approval • PI: Faculty ONLY. Individual who is primarily • Ethics application should additionally include: responsible for the study (research supervisor), but – PREP consent form (credit point options; course is probably not actually testing participants instructor knowledge statement; research • Researcher: Anyone who is actually testing participation vs. observation options; etc.) participants. May be an RA, Honours student, – Sona study description (brief recruitment graduate student, etc. description of study that will be posted on Sona – Some researchers may be more involved in the study for participants to view before deciding whether (i.e., requesting study approval, posting the study to sign up) description) than others, but are still not considered PIs for Sona account purposes. – Feedback form (describes study purpose, • Can request an account at any time (e.g., can add hypotheses, contact info, reference(s)) an RA to an existing study during the semester) http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ PREP New Study Request Requesting Hours • Complete form and email to me • Why do I need hours? – Hours are used when a timeslot is posted • Form includes full description of study – Unfilled timeslot hours are returned to pool procedure and Sona study description; attach – Earned credits use an hour (one hour per credit point) consent form, feedback form, ICEHR approval – When hours are used up, no timeslots can be posted • Why limit hours? • Can submit new study requests at any time – Planning – Helps balance system for researchers http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ 3
24/09/2013 Summary 1) ICEHR Approval to test PREP participants 2) Request PREP account 3) Request hours (prior to start of semester) 4) Request new PREP study 5) Post study description and timeslots 6) Test participants who sign up Questions? http://dogsbody.psych.mun.ca/prep/ 4
