  2. BACKGROUND • Ofsted framework changed, raising the bar for all schools • Our previous inspection, two years ago, was Requires Improvement for all areas • During that time expansion continued, Preschool, ASC, increase in numbers, growth of year 6

  3. SINCE THEN • Complete refocus & rapid improvement in all areas • ASC provision established • 2 year old provision established • Restructure of governing board • A LOT of hard work

  4. RECENT OFSTED OUTCOMES • Two day inspection in March • Three inspectors including one HMI • Rigorous inspection framework that is a constant test for 48 hours • Fair, thorough and based on a snapshot of the academy • Not a supportive tool, only a measure

LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT - RI Strengths • Leaders have driven improvements in quality of education for pupils • Leaders have improved the evaluation for Pupil Premium spending • Leaders have strong subject knowledge & all subjects are embedded well across the curriculum • PE is effective & there is an enhanced focus on healthy living • Pupils develop their spiritual, moral, social & cultural understanding well • Leadership for Special Educational Needs is effective and these pupils, including the pupils in ASC, make good progress

Areas to improve • Leaders, including Governors, do not evaluate and set targets for Upper Key Stage 2 accurately enough • Governors do not provide effective challenge to the school, particularly in the area of upper key stage 2 • Governors do not evaluate effectiveness of Pupil Premium spending

ACTIONS • Leaders will be using new approach to target setting based on models already used in areas of the academy • We are adopting a new simpler assessment system from September • Governors will undergo an external review • Governors will provide additional focus and support in UKS2 • Governors will provide additional focus on Pupil Premium • Governors will ensure challenge is evidenced

LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT SAFEGUARDING - GOOD Strengths • Safeguarding arrangements are effective • Leaders are tenacious in ensuring pupils are safe • The safeguarding lead works well with the welfare officer • There is a strong culture of safeguarding throughout the school • SCR meets requirements and is regularly checked • Pupils told inspectors they felt safe and protected by the staff • Parents said their children were safe and well cared for

  10. ACTIONS • To continue to improve on the areas where we know we could do better • Governors will continue to monitor and support areas of improvement

QUALITY OF TEACHING & LEARNING - GOOD Strengths • Relationships between pupils & staff are very strong • Throughout each year group, pupils talk constructively to support each others learning • Pupils have opportunities to write for a range of purposes • The teaching of phonics is a strength of the school • At key stage 1, pupils develop effective skills through well planned lessons & as a result pupils achieve well

Strengths continued… • Teachers & TAs use effective questioning to develop pupil’s understanding • TAs provide effective supports to enable pupils to make progress • Pupils with SEND receive effective support both one to one and in small groups • Disadvantaged pupils make Good progress across the curriculum • Pupils respond with enthusiasm to specialist teaching • Support for NQTs is very effective • Parents are very positive about the school

  13. Areas to improve • Teaching for Year 6 is not challenging enough & starting points for those children not considered effectively

ACTIONS • Changes to streaming of children so teachers teach their own class • Leader, Mrs Bennett, to move to year 6 • Earlier intervention support for all pupils • Sharper focus on combined assessment outcomes for end of year • Use of new assessment and target setting system (as mentioned earlier) • Governors will complete regular additional monitoring visits in UKS2

  15. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, BEHAVIOUR & WELFARE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT & WELFARE - GOOD Strengths • The school is highly inclusive • Pupils are polite, respectful, kind & welcoming. They are a credit to the ways in which the school has nurtured & supported their social & emotional development • Pupils are well cared for & the range of clubs & nurture facilities supports pupil’s well-being • Pupil’s views are taken into account and listened to • Pupils learn how to keep themselves safe through the curriculum

  17. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, BEHAVIOUR & WELFARE BEHAVIOUR - GOOD Strengths • The behaviour of pupils is Good • Pupils behave very well both within the classroom & around the school building • There is a harmonious learning environment

  18. Areas to improve • Pupils attendance has improved, but is not inline with national due to lack of understanding of parents and pupil’s of the link between achievement and attendance at school

  19. ACTIONS • To continue to improve on the areas where we know we could do better • Focus on parental engagement with attendance through a variety of means • Develop pupils understanding of attendance as a crucial link with learning • Governors will continue to monitor through regular visits

OUTCOMES FOR PUPIL’S - RI Strengths • Disadvantaged pupil’s at key stage 1 make good progress inline with national • Key stage 1 pupil’s make make Good progress in English and currently making Good progress in Maths • Strong guidance from the phonics lead has ensured teaching of phonics has improved markedly • Pupils who have SEND make Good progress from their starting points • Pupils make Good progress in a range of subjects across year groups

  21. Areas to improve • Progress & attainment has improved, but the rate has not been quick enough • Disadvantaged pupils in key stage 2 make Good progress, but it is not rapid enough • Teaching for Year 6 is not challenging enough & starting points for those children not considered effectively

EARLY YEARS PROVISION - GOOD Strengths • Highly effective leadership of early years has transformed the provision • The early years leaders use assessment effectively • The indoor & outdoor environments have been transformed • The early years provision has embedded clear & fluid transition points

Strengths continued… • Children develop string skills in early years which ensures they are ready for year 1 • Children develop their language skills well through high level interaction with adults • Although numbers of disadvantaged is small, they are well supported and consequently make Good progress

  26. ACTIONS • To aim to have an Outstanding provision at the next Ofsted inspection • Governors to continue to support and challenge
