  2. Our Team • Our team consists of: • Mr J Smith – Head teacher • Mrs N Read – Deputy Head teacher • Mrs A Wintersgill – Lead SENDco • Mrs S Bennett – Upper Key Stage 2 Co-ordinator • Mrs E Eely – Year 5 and 6 teacher for English and general subjects. • Mrs G Palmer – Mathematics Co-Ordinator/Year 5 and 6 Maths teacher and general subjects. • Miss Thomson – Year 5 and 6 Maths Teacher • Miss Craig – Year 5 and 6 English Teacher

  3. SATs (Standard assessment tests) • Week beginning 14 th May 2018 • During this week pupils in Year 6 will sit National Curriculum tests in the core subjects English and Maths. • The Standards & Testing Agency (on behalf of the Department for Education) regulates the national curriculum assessments to ensure that standards are maintained and assessments are fair and effective .

  4. What are they designed to test? • Key Stage 2 tests are designed to test pupils’ KNOWLEDGE & UNDERSTANDING of specific elements of the key stage 2 programmes of study. • They provide a snapshot of pupils’ attainment at the end of the key stage. Pupils take tests in: • English • Maths

  5. The English and Maths Tests For 2018 the set of KS2 national curriculum tests has been introduced consisting of: • English reading : reading booklet and associated answer booklet • English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1: short answer questions • English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 2: spelling • Mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic • Mathematics Paper 2: reasoning • Mathematics Paper 3: reasoning

  6. • There are no ‘higher papers’ all pupils sit a standard test which holds a variety of questions based at different levels.

  7. Science Not all children in Year 6 will take science SATs. • However, a number of schools will be required to take part in science • sampling: a test administered to a selected sample of children thought to be representative of the population as a whole. Schools that will be part of this sampling will be informed in the spring • term. Science sampling tests Schools selected for science sampling will need to be available to administer • the tests within the 2 week period from Monday 4 June 2018. For those who are selected, there will be three papers: • – Biology : 25 minutes, 22 marks – Chemistry : 25 minutes, 22 marks – Physics : 25 minutes, 22 marks

  9. How will the papers be marked? • The old system of national curriculum levels is now no longer used, after the department of education abolished it in Summer 2015. • Instead, children will be given standardised scores. You will be given your child’s score, alongside the average for their school, the local area and nationally. • There will also be a ‘performance descriptor’ of the expected standard for Key Stage 2 pupils. The Department for Education is aiming for 85 per cent of children to reach or exceed that standard.

  10. Test Results • Test results will be given out on Tuesday 10 th July 2017 Each pupil registered for the tests will receive: • A raw score (the number of marks awarded) • A scaled score • Confirmation of whether or not they met the ‘expected standard’

  11. Maths The mathematics test comprises 2 components, presented to pupils as 3 test papers:  Paper 1: Arithmetic, 30 minutes (written)  Paper 2 + 3: Reasoning, mathematical fluency, solving problems and reasoning , 40 minutes per paper Square grids are provided where pupils need to show their method, in some answer spaces of the arithmetic paper and some of the questions on Paper 2.

  12. Maths Paper 1: arithmetic assesses basic mathematical calculations. The questions cover • straightforward addition and subtraction and more complex calculations with fractions worth 1 mark each. They also cover long divisions and long multiplications worth 2 marks each. Pupils will have 30 minutes to answer the questions which are worth 40 marks. Papers 2 and 3 assess mathematical fluency, solving mathematical problems and • mathematical reasoning. Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including: – Multiple choice – True or false – Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart – Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem. Pupils will have 40 minutes to complete each test paper worth 35 marks per paper. •

  19. What we can do • Focus on the skills necessary for the Maths Arithmetic Paper 1 (as seen in the sample questions). • Use of MyMaths online homework resource. • Regular practice of Reasoning questions in class • Regular testing so that children are familiar with SATs and know what each question involves. • TTRS – Times Tables Rock Stars to help with times tables.

  20. How can Parents Help? • Help and encourage ALL PUPILS to know their times tables. • Encourage pupils to complete all homework. • Use of online maths games and resources. • Other resources: Revisewise website – BBC, CGP revision books and MyMaths. • Easter holiday homework tasks. • Know targets and how to improve to the next level or sub- level.

  21. English There are three papers; • English reading test  three different texts to read, both fiction and non-fiction  comprehension questions on each text  multiple choice or short written answers  worth 1-3 marks  1 hour • English GPS Paper 1: short answer questions  40+ questions  multiple choice or short written answers  worth 1-2 marks each  45 minutes • English GPS Paper 2: spelling  20 spellings

  22. GPS - Types of answer There are a number of ways in which children will need to answer the questions; • Tick boxes • Underlining clauses/phrases/text • Circling the answer • Drawing lines to ‘match’ the answer • Labelling parts of speech • Short written answers It is vital that children read the questions carefully and follow the instructions given.

  23. Questions may focus on spelling rules such as prefixes, suffixes, homophones

  24. Or they might look at punctuation. Identifying the correct punctuation within sentences or indicating where punctuation should be are common.

  25. Other questions will look at word classes and functions.

  26. Standard English and formality will also be assessed.

  27. There is also a separate spelling paper

  28. Reading- Types of answer • Multiple choice • Ranking / ordering events • Matching • Labelling • Find and copy • Short responses • Open-ended responses

  29. give / explain the meaning of words in context retrieve and record information

  30. summarise main ideas from more than one paragraph explain and justify inferences with evidence from the text

  31. predict what might happen from details explain how information contributes to meaning as a whole

  32. explain how meaning is enhanced through choice of words make comparisons within the text

  33. What we can do • Focus on the skills necessary for the English grammar, punctuation and spelling paper (as seen in the sample questions). • Spelling tests focusing on the statutory list set by government. • Reading comprehension practise. • Extended writing to practise the skills necessary in a concrete way. • Regular testing so that children are familiar with SATs and know what each question involves.

  34. How can Parents Help? • Encourage children to read, asking questions to check understanding. This could be novels but also a variety of forms - leaflets, recipes, instructions, reports, articles • Help with learning spellings – looking for patterns and rules. • Support with their writing in terms of grammar, punctuation and varied vocabulary by reading work aloud. • Encourage pupils to complete all homework. • Use of online English games and resources. • Easter holiday homework tasks. Other resources: BBC Bitesize, CGP revision and question books and Education City.

  35. Class intervention We are currently running Maths, reading, spelling and handwriting intervention sessions. • Children receive small group support for 30/40 minutes Monday – Thursday. • These are run by Miss Craig (Maths) and Mrs Heath (English). • This time is NOT taken out of their Maths or English time. • The interventions are centred around the SATs questions and are linked to class learning. • This involves children working to develop questioning and understanding of how to answer the questions correctly.

  36. Mock Week The week beginning 26 th March will be Mock SATs week. During this week we will sit SATs test papers in the conditions expected during the actual SATs. • Monday 26/03: English GPS and spelling • Tuesday 27/03: English Reading • Wednesday 28/03: Maths Arithmetic 1 and Reasoning 2 • Thursday 29/03: Maths Reasoning 3

  37. Questions? Thank you all for your time and support.
