  2. New Places to Learn Community Engagement in Education Project Aims of the project: • To encourage open conversations about education among schools and parents • To get ideas and produce leaflets that would outline basic information and signpost to key support agencies.

  3. New Places to Learn Community Engagement in Education Project Background: • Too many children are not succeeding in school • There are low levels of aspiration in many disadvantaged communities and in some schools • The relationships between schools and parents are very varied.

  4. New Places to Learn Community Engagement in Education Project Workshops were held in: • Dee Street Community Centre • Bloomfield Community Association • Walkway Community Association • Willowfield Parish Community Association • East Belfast Sure Start • Short Strand Community Centre Participants were asked four questions about their experiences with education and schools, and their involvement in their children’s education.

  5. New Places to Learn Community Engagement in Education Project Workshop questions: 1. What is your relationship with your child's school? What is good and what could be better? 2. What is it you would want to know more about? 3. What do you want from education for your children? 4. What could/should happen for you to become more involved in your children's education?

New Places to Learn Community Engagement in Education Project Key Findings: • Parents want to be more involved in their children’s education, but at times do not know how to do this • There is a need for basic information to be made more available and accessible • Special Education Needs is a key area that parents need more support and information about. • Parents would welcome more specific classes to enable the to assist their children’s learning.

  7. New Places to Learn Community Engagement in Education Project A Parent’s Guide Helping your child to do well at school in East Belfast Response : • Leaflets received a positive response, and are in high demand • Currently seeking funding to enable further printing and wider distribution.
