New hysteresis cycle for low energy operation C. Liu Mar. 16, 2018
New cycle vs. old cycle Current (181.593A) at which we inject and collide beams. old new
History • P. Thieberger proposed a new hysteresis in 2012 APEX workshop to reduce high harmonics from RHIC dipole. • P. Wanderer mentioned a modeling of RHIC dipole by Dr. Wang from LBL. http://accelconf.web.cern.ch/AccelConf/napac2016/papers/mopob49.pdf • Dr. Wang is working on the modeling of new hysteresis cycles. • A new hysteresis cycle is being considered for the fixed target program at 3.85GeV in 2018.
Potential benefits • Reduce the high harmonics of the dipole magnets. • Improve the reproducibility of the dipole magnetic field. • Reduce the field contribution of the persistent current.
Plan • Run new hysteresis, machine tuning, make measurements (orbit, tune, chrom) for drift correction to be compared with that at injection energy during normal operation. • Run hysteresis again, make measurements to quantify machine reproducibility. • ~5 hrs.
